Picked my 2009 Volkswagen GT 1.4 TSI (petrol) up on Thursday, from a Volkswagen dealership - I drove 2 miles down the road and found that the vehicle could not travel over 30mph.. drove it back and they replaced a sensor but had to be kept in overnight until this part arrived.

Saturday evening, I am traveling to a friends house and there is a lot of smoke coming from the bonnet! I pull over, pull the bonnet up and there's oil over some of the plastics, look underneath the car and it's dripping oil..

AA arrived this morning and checked all oil levels and it does seem to be fine, so it's not as if it's a bad leak that the whole vehicle is empty. They've just towed the car back to the dealership for me and now I'll await for someone to give me a call tomorrow and explain what's happened.

What would you do if you was me? my parents want me to change the car.. but I am in love with it.. I just don't want to be running into these sorts of issues all the time..

I know what you are saying " I love the car, I don't want to give it up." I think we were all in a situation that is very similar to yours. Human emotion trumps logic. Try to take your heart out of the issue. If you had a friend that was experiencing these issues would you tell them to keep the car or return it? Is a new car in your mind supposed to have this many issues? Would these be the last of the problems once they are fixed, or will 5 more arise once these are fixed? What kind of warranty do you have? Is it enough to cover any and all of these issues? Lastly, keep in mind parents know best, they are just trying to do what's best for you!

With that said, if I were in your situation, I would have a serious talk with the dealership. If you didn't already see the car facts, demand them now. I would say I love the car, but with all of these issues within the first two days I believe you sold me a lemon and I would like to return the car. I would ask to know how they put a car on the lot with this many issues not being caught? Accidents happen, but I would assume this dealer is not top notch. Didn't these issues manifest during a test drive ( not being able to drive over 30 mph?) The only factor that could leave you stuck with the car would be if you bought an as is car. So to sum it up, I would take the car back and not leave until they took the car back.

I had a Triumph TR8. It was beautiful but it was a piece of DOO DOO. After spending umteen hours fixing it (I actually became handy at engine work because of it). It broke down almost every week. BUT I loved the car!! After spending so much money to where I could have bought a new car for it...I eventually had to JUNK the car.

You may love the car but TRUST ME ON THIS....get a different car!! Today's quality of cars should not have this issue!! DUMP IT. If you like that type of car get another one of the same type. If not look at another brand. Once you get another one or another brand of a similar type...you will fall in love all over again...face it most guys are car guys!!!

Get rid of it. I'm sure you can find another VW in better shape...

Thanks all.

Garage phoned today and it needed a pipe replacing, they said it's *nothing* serious, and I will take receipt of all work which has recently been completed too.

My dad had a CLK 55 back in the day. Bought it used, only a couple years old and less than 10,000 miles on it. One thing after another kept happening. He loved the car, but got rid of it because many people need cars to work, go to the doctor, go to other appointments, and if your main form of transportation can't get you there then you could have issues greater than your beloved car not working.

Thanks all.

They'd be fools if they told you the truth. They want that car to be someone else's problem. That someone is you, take the car back and demand your money back.

lol they got a sucker on the hook so they arent gonna tell you the truth.

Hey its your money and you will be learning the hard way.

A pipe? A vehicle isn't plumbing. You might want to find out exactly what was done and if you aren't sure what they did, ask someone you trust that knows vehicles, or post up here.

A used car is always a bit of a gamble, I would be concerned you are currently doubling down in an attempt to catch up to even. This is seldom a good way to gamble.

Basically, the first problem I had with the vehicle was a problem with the sensor - they replaced that, second it was leaking oil, only a small fraction, that was the pipe what needed replacing.

I do believe them, they are a genuine Volkswagen dealership - even the AA dude come out and the vehicle still had plenty of oil and was not reading any error codes when connected to the computer.

Have the dealership issue an extended warranty. They did a presale check ????

They said they did. And yes, as a gesture they are giving me 3 and a half year of extended warranty.

To me its a sign of things to come. I would ditch it . But that's just me. I wish you luck on what ever you decide.

Is it brand new or preowned? Depending on the color if I were you I'd return it (J/K about the color). If it's new the smoke might be the VOH fog (I think that's what it's called) that happens to new cars. My mother's new dark red 2015 Ford Fusion (eco boost 4 cylinders) was smoking badly when I pushed the RMP's in the 6k range looking for some power, but it ended up being normal.

Pre owned with 47k miles on the vehicle!

Ah really? I didn't know that, if my vehicle was brand new and started smoking I'd be quite worried.. lol.

Does it still smoke now?!

No, it stopped smoking the 2nd or 3rd time I pushed it hard but it was brand new. Sorry to hear about your car troubles I hope they fix it for you.

were you able to figure out where it's smoking from? Was it oil dripping on exhaust, burned oil smoke from tailpipes, exhaust headers leaking, burned gaskets, or any melted plastics?

Read the fine print in that warranty. What it covers and what it doesn't....I feel like you need a doctorate in warranties just to figure out what's covered.

Ah that's good! - it was a small hair hole in a pipe, the smoke was caused by it spraying on the engine, I got a replacement pipe and everything seems to be working great now! A beautiful car to drive too :)
