Hi,

I have a problem with buffing out scratches.

and here is my problem. The sunlight showed me those little hairline scratches.

What can cause these little scratches? Why those are still there?

Here is what I used:
White pad with #105
Orange pad with #205
Blue pad with Menzerna SF 4500

My hood is junk. It has a lot of stone chip and I've already have a good one. Just I don't want to go to the next step until I'm not satisfied with my work.

Regards,
Munya

How deep are those scratches? Is it not possible that they are in fact too deep to SAFELY polish out....

In other words if you were to abrade away the paint surrounding the scratch to the lowest level of the scratch, you would in fact have abraded away all you clear coat?

You should have used Orange with 105 and White with 205 in my opinion.
Orange has more cut than white.

I know the bigger scratches are too big and those are through clearcoat.
I'm sure I can't polish them out safely.

Here is another picture which shows my problem.

Thank you. I didn't know that the Orange has more cut than white. I thought the yellow has more cut than white.

Sorry - my bad - I never noticed those in the original pic and thought you were referring to the deeper scratches.

Perhaps then c8n's comment about rather having used the orange pad to work the 105, and then 205 on the white is a more viable reason?

Thank you both of you. I made a mistake with the pads. I'll try the Orange pad with 105 and then the white pad with 205. Thank you again.

I learnt that those are not scratches those are swirls.

I don't have a DA polisher. I've a rotary polisher.
I'm using Mike's 10 @ 10 technique.

What kind of towel are you wiping with and do you use a fabric softner?

Technique is the key word here. Bottom line is you are getting rotary buffer marks left behind. Pads must be cleaned frequently to avoid leaving marks behind. What rpm speed are you buffing at? What RB do you have?

You can mix pads/products to vary the end result. Yellow then white then blue in terms of most agressive to least agressive. Same with products M105, M205, SF4500. You should work on a test spot first to figure out your process.

Now would be a good time to buy a DA since they are on sale if it's in your budget. RB's take a lot of work to finish swril free. The DA's are a no brainer.

Just to make sure... we are talking about LC pads, correct?
If so, yellow>orange>white

It's much harder to finish flawlessly with a rotary than with a da.

Thanks the info. What kind of DA polisher do you recommend? PC?

What kind of towel are you wiping with and do you use a fabric softner?

I'm using the DI microfiber all purpose towels. I didn't use any fabric softener. Do you think my towels can be the problem?
Can the towels make those swirls?

I'm trying to get the right technique. It's not easy but I'm on it. Definitely needs more practice.
1500rpm with #105
1200rpm with #205
1000rpm with menzerna sf4500
I have the ATD one. Here is the link
The test spot is a great idea. I'll do that the next time.
What kind of DA polisher do you recommend? Should I use the DA with just the finish step? DA with sf4500, right?

Thank you. I went with the white instead of the orange. My bad. Thanks the correction.

Can the towels make those swirls? Yes dry or buff in straight lines and see what happend

1500rpm with #105 rpms look good
1200rpm with #205
1000rpm with menzerna sf4500 if it goes lower than 1000 use it. mines a Dewalt and 1000 is the lowest.

What kind of DA polisher do you recommend? GG it's the best value Should I use the DA with just the finish step? Not really but definately to finish polishing and even for waxing. DA with sf4500, right? Yes can use it for all steps especially polishing

I think the buffers are on sale GG is on close out.

Thank you guys for the advice. I bought the GG and couple of other things too. I'm thinking of giving up the whole thing. I'm not able to do a swirl free finish.
When I'm done with the finish step everything looks good on the test spot. But when I'm starting to buff off the CG black light I get a lot of swirls. It doesn't matter if I'm going with just the wax instead of the CG black light. The swirls are there. No matter how gently I'm trying to buff off the product.
By the way, sometimes I have a hard time to buff off the wax or the black light. It sticks to my paint like a glue.

I also tried a lot of microfiber towels.
DI microfiber all purpose towel
Super deluxe microfiber towel
Microfiber towels was included with the GG
and I've 2-3 another brands. Nothing works on my paint.
Perhaps the towels are the problem. I have no clue.

Can the towels make those swirls?.

It's possible. Some clear coats are so extremaly soft just wiping them with a quality towel will induce swirl marks

I have a remedy for these incredibly soft clear coats, but I'm hanging onto that trade secret ;)
