What's the correct distance from the light stand to surface of the car to get a bead on swirls etc ?? maybe 6 ft??

There is No Magic Distance. It all depends on the type of Halogen Lights you have and the wattage of the bulbs. Just experiment. Move the light at different lengths and when you can see the swirls and imperfections, leave it at that distance.

What brand is your 500??? mines a HUSKY:)

Mines from Sears.........Craftsman.
LOL. Almost waiting for you to say in a sing-song fashion........."Mine's better than yours" :D

I usually put mine about 4 feet back. But I am going to start to pull them back a little because I have had a few close calls with the lights tipping over. Thankfully they never hit a car but it has been close. So in the future I am going to try to keep them far enough away that if it were to fall that it won't hit the car.
