Has anyone ever gotten hand pain or cramps from detailing before?

Absolutely. Also be careful if you are prone to carpal tunnel irritation and be careful with your shoulders...this of course also depends on how old you are.

Lol, pretty much with every car, especially if applying something by hand like a was or sealant.

Yes, have it pretty bad right now actually. Funny thing is, part of the reason I enjoy detailing is it keeps me active.

I have severe WED (Willis-Ekbom Disease - aka RLS), and if I sit still or lie down the pain in my arms and legs gets borderline unbearable. It's worse at night, but happens during the day as well. Many think that it's a BS disease, but it's very real indeed.

I'm 66 and I find I cramp up much more now than when I was younger. You might look into the Pinnacle Polishing Pal. It's helped me a lot.

I've always gotten cramps in my hands, I can type all day, but can barely write a page by hand before getting cramps. Then again my penmanship is terrible.

Honestly the reason I jumped straight into a rotary buffer and very agressive metal polishing was due to how quickly my hands get tired of doing things the hard way all for mediocre results at the end.

My day job is turning wrenches, every once and awhile I will get a cramp that cripples my fingers when working in an odd space, my hands look like an old lady with sever arthritis when it happens.

A healthy diet goes a long ways towards reducing ailments. My mom was a dietician, but with an italian upbringing. She knew how to eat well, but believed in enjoying your food and making lots of it. I ate the best meals yet stayed very healthy when she was around, due to complications with her transplant she passed away a few years ago, I had been away at school eating their crappy food as it was, and now living on my own eating crappy food because I don't have/make the time to eat a good meal often enough.

For me a glass of milk is the best energy drink ever. However I am a dairy farmer and from the dairy state. It disgusts me that milk is a rarity at many places and I often get a weird look when ordering it. In addition to the weird look they usually say "Did you say Milk" and/or "We only have White". I feel like its a crime to drink white milk anywhere anymore. Heaven forbid it be whole or 2%. Makes me angry when they bring it out with everybodys sodas before the meal is even there, milk gets warm fast, bring it with the meal. Then again I am a stuck up dairy person from the state that used to have a law banning margarine and requiring apple pie to be served with cheese( try it, its actually good). We do still have a law saying butter must be served but margarine can be an option.

I also have found Spicy V8 juice to be a great supplement, tons of potassium in that stuff helps keep the cramps away, the spicy side of it makes it taste better to me.

I try to use a machine whenever possible however I have some troubles with the DA's and such. I spend a lot of money to try and get high quality balanced tools so that I can work longer. I have Raynauds in my hands which isn't painful or anything, but it can be a nuisance. I'm sure enough others on here have it as well. Basically mildly cool (for me 50* or so) temperatures or vibrations trigger your fingers to turn white and loose feeling. Its not like sticking your finger in snow in the winter, it is totally painless just aggravating because your fingers are basically dead. It looks odd because your hand will be red but your fingers will progressively get whiter with no smooth transition, its just white, red. Sometimes they turn purple but usually when they are close to returning to normal in my case. My left pointer finger is the first to do it. We keep the shop at 55 in the winter which is almost a little warm when you start working, but when i sit here typing I put a little honeywell electric heater on the desk to try and keep my fingers for numbing, my pointer usually still does but I can keep the rest alive. When the fingers come back to normal its a mild tingly pins and needles feeling, not painful at all unlike actually freezing your fingers in the winter.

I couldn't imagine having the WED mentioned above, painful diseases are never fun, Raynauds is annoying and doesn't have a cure, but it is generally harmless, some people do get gang green though.

Do you have meds that you have to take in order to sleep at night erichaley?

Picture of typical Raynauds, Mine starts in my left pointer, then goes to my ring fingers then middle then pinky, not sure why, its odd. YOu can literally grab your fingers with a pliers and barely feel the pain.

Yes, but I still don't get much sleep. Itll knock me out for a couple hours or so, but the rest of the night is hit or miss.

When laying down, the feeling can sometimes be described as feeling like every single muscle in your legs are about to go into a full-on cramp, and every muscle is tight as a drum. Getting up and walking around is the only "cure", until you sit or lay down again...

I'm 24 always worked with my hands and still do. (Graveyard grocery stocker opening about 400 boxes a night and detailing during day) Got bad to a point where my thumbs were going numb. Had to start doing hand stretches. It helped but my hands still feel stressed.

Ack! I forgot to tie this "funny thing is..." tangent back to the original topic!

The funny thing is... I've traded one type of discomfort with another type of discomfort.

Also, now I'm getting some swelling and numbness in my hands and wrists, and can't exactly tell what's causing it.

But... I love detailing, so...

The only that has ever hurt me was my lower back, and those usually happen only after a full correction detail, which included interior. After i got myself a rolling little chair it's been a lot better.

I love detailing, I would turn it into a business, but I can barely do my own car. I've had 3 lower back surgeries. I now have 4 levels fused with bone grafts, plates, and screws, big long screws. I also have 2 levels fused in my neck. On top of that I have constant, chronic pain under my right shoulder blade.

When I detail my car I have to do it in stages. Wash, rest, clay, rest, correction in panels, rest in between, then sealant, rest, and then LSP if I do that. That allows for dust to settle in between each step and weather changes. What is an 8-12 hour marathon for some of you is multi-day for me.

To stay with the original topic yes my hands cramp and I have what's called tennis elbow. Don't play tennis, it's from playing the drums. I used to play in a party group. Loved it but had to give that up. So now I play in the church praise band 1/2 hour at a time. I wear a brace on my arm when I play or detail. I also often wear a back brace when I detail. The arm brace, available in your local drug store really helps the arm and wrist pain. My hands cramp when playing drums so I often wear drumming gloves for that. Part of the problem of the hand cramp is gripping too hard. If I'd relax my grip on the stick, tool, applicator, pencil, I'd have less issues.

@ Erichaley, here's a thought on the leg cramps at rest, in bed. I often have severe leg pain too. I'm pretty much a physical wreck. If you can get past the stigma, have your Dr write a script for compression stockings. They work. I used to be in so much leg pain in bed or sitting in my recliner. They help tremendously. The cost shocked me, like $80 but insurance paid for two pairs every 6 months. That's my $0.02.

Speaking of that, I guess it's a sign of the times, but why is there no cents sign on a computer keyboard? Spiney-Dave

Most of my cramping comes from being dehydrated. I did a 8.5 hr detail a couple of weekends ago. 90+ degrees with 90%+ humidity. I was slamming water and gatorade til I ran out at about hr 6...the last 2.5 hours were pure misery!!

That's strange...Spiney-Dave
I can type and get a "¢ sign" "on my computer keyboard".

Try this:
1.) Make sure your numbers lock is on (over @ the 10-key numeric keypad...usually on the far-right of the keyboard)
2.) Activate the curser in the text field area you want to place the "¢ sign"
3.) Press and hold down the alt key
4.) Then type: 0162...on the 10-key numeric keypad on the right (not the numbers at the top of the keyboard).
5.) Then let go of the alt key...A "¢ sign" should appear shortly thereafter. If not:
The program you are using does not support this character.

BTW: It does appear that the "AGO-program" supports my efforts to post the: "¢ sign"

Credit goes to:
My next door neighbor's 8 yrs. old granddaughter.
Said it was: "Her 2¢ worth"!
"Makes ¢¢¢¢ to me", I said in return.

Speaking of "return"...
Do you remember when you could return soda pop bottles for: 2¢?
Too young?...How about 5¢, then?

:)

That's cheating, Mr. Unicode...

Yes, I do still remember when you could return bottles for 5¢, still can in Iowa, where I'm from, but can't where I moved far far away to... Nebraska. And not only Nebraska... Eastern Nebraska...

¢...Well, I'll be!

THANK YOU Bob!!!!!!!!

The 'big' bottles were worth a nickel, those were the find of the day.

You're welcome Bill!

Glass milk jugs were the "King of the Hill"...
(Remember those "KOTH-fights" as a young'un?)

Maybe that's the cause of my hand cramps/pain nowadays?

On a serious note:
Vibration White Finger is not a happy condition.
Best to seek other tools/methods/processes to accomplish the "work at hand"...
whether it's detailing related; or attributed to other means of earning income.

Long-term, believe me, or not: It's devastating...
Same came be said of: Peripheral Neuropathy

:)
