Need some advice guys, I've heard about and seen dealer horror stories and don't want my Camaro to become one. Now I know I need to make it abundantly clear to these people that they're not to wash the car. I'll put a very big note on the steering and make sure they guy at the desk writes it up on the work order. Is there anything else I should do that I'm missing?

Just leave it at what you're already planning. If they don't listen and cause damage, charge them for your time to fix it.

No need to be senselessly rude to them if they haven't given you any reason to be. The more courteous you are about your request the more likely they are to take good care of you.

Yeah, I don't plan on being a jerk, but I do plan on getting my point across. It's taken too much work for someone else to goof my car up.

The more you press the issue, the more likely they're just going to think you're the overly-anal customer that's impossible to please. I'd just leave well enough alone and stick to your original plan of letting the service advisor know that you don't want the car washed, and if you want to put a note on the steering wheel, go for it. At least give them the benefit of the doubt.

You have covered your bases except for one small detail. Hang your "DO NOT WASH" note on the dash where it will be seen by anyone who gets behind the wheel to move or drive it. If you post your note on the steering wheel, someone's going to remove it and set it aside when the car is moved, then you can't control who sees or doesn't see the note after that. My advice comes from 30 years in a new car dealer's sales and service departments.

I"m with Bill on this one and have posted pretty much what he's posted for years on MOL...

You can't take chances for all the reasons Bill stated and others...

Keep this in mind...

If they do wash it and in the process instill swirls and scratches, then not only do you have to remove the swirls and scratches but now you'll have less paint on the car to last over the service life of the car because removing the swirls means removing a little clear paint.

And the scratching, the buffing and the removal of your precious clear coat can all be avoided if you can just get them to not touch your car.

What's strange is no is is bright enough to look at your car and think to themselves...

"Wow! This car has a really nice finish"

In other words... there's no need to was it...

I went through this same dilemma with a brand new black Honda Pilot I owned and we printed out nice signs that said, Don't Wash and taped 3-4 in the inside of the windows.

We told the Manager and anyone else that was involved... "Don't wash or wax or anything...."

Good luck... Maybe print out the below two articles and hand them to whoever you have to deal with to get your point across... take your swirl finder light and shine it on one of their cars and then on your car to show them what you're talking about.

Based on my personal experience you have a 50/50 chance your instructions will be followed. I had a custom dyno tune on my 05 GTO and left instructions to the service writer not to reprogram the computer and I left a note on the steering wheel also to not reprogram the computer. Need I say more? After months of complaining, I finally got the dealership to pay for a new tune. Haven't been back since.

I disagree.

Yeah, the benefit of the doubt would come at my car's expense so that's not happening. Like I said I'm not going to be a jerk, but I'm going to make it abundantly clear they're not to wash my car or even wipe it down.
