Headlight Coating Removal

Yeah, most of you guys must be seeing something different in the pictures than I am, it looks to me like tinted PPF.

After googling PPF, I believe this is probably what I've got. My plan is to try to heat and scrape/pull it off the best I can and in the largest chunks that I can. Then I'll see what residue is left behind. Thanks for all who took the time to look at my poor quality pictures and offer input.

So after 5 months of putting this job off I finally decided to tackle it this morning. Roughly four hours later, here's the finished product.

That's stuff was really brittle in places and very tedious to remove, especially on the driver's side. I did the passenger side second and had my technique down by then. It came off in two or three big pieces and then I just had to deal with a few remnants. Whatever the goo was that he used to apply those things took forever to get off but all it took was some window cleaner with ammonia in it. Spray that on, it turns white and kind of foamy looking and then carefully and methodically scrape and wipe off.

Thank you. I wish I would've taken pictures during the process in case it could help somebody else but my hands were disgusting. Covered in gooey stuff. Soap wouldn't touch it. Only the window cleaner. After I finished cleaning them up good I applied McKees Headlight Protectant. I've read mixed reviews of the longevity of it on here but it was so easy to apply that I don't really care. I'll just plan to do it every time I wash the car.

Great job and my apologies as I did not take a hard look at the photos. If I had I would have known it was PPF.

Have you tried a heat gun? A hair dryer might work in a pinch.
I've taken decals off this way with great success. I used my wife's hairdryer. I would try that first.

Thank you. And no need to apologize. I went back and looked at the original pictures I took to compare and I thought they were horrible. Very hard to tell what it was.
