Headlight Lens Restoration: Bug Spray Trick Vs. DP’s AIO Vs. Meg’s Plastx

that headlamp looks new
thanks for the review :)

:xyxthumbs:

Thanks for clearing that all up... Excuse the pun😊

Cheers!

Great write up! An acquaintance of mine was carrying on about the wonders of Off for headlights the other day. I tried to explain to him that his results were temporary but he wasn't hearing it. I would love to show him your article and test!

Oh well, as long as he don't spray any DEET on my vehicle!

Please do! What kills me is that per ounce a 6oz bottle of bug spray cost more then a 10oz bottle of Meg's PlastX. I bought the bottle of OFF Monday night and paid $8.99:

AG sells PlastX for $6.50 and my local PepBoys carries it for $8.99. So even if your buddy didn't want to get the DP Kit I recommended, buying a bottle of PlastX is still going to be cheaper and produce better results. A little bit goes a long way and works on pretty much any clear plastic surface.

Thanks for your great contribution!

Cheers! I'm happy to do so.

Yep, I bought PlastX to take care of the plastic rear window on my convertible. Over the course of five years I cleaned it inside and out twice a year before modding with an aftermarket glass rear window. I've also used the PlastX on headlamp lenses, tail lamps, instrument clusters. That bottle I got seven years ago still has about four ounces in it!

That's been my experience too, I only recently bought the bottle PlastX used in this test. The 6oz bottle that came with Meguiars' Headlight & Clear Plastic Restoration Kit lasted at least 5 years and I used it on way more then just my headlights.

Awesome side by side review. You made it look so easy :-)

Cool, happy to hear it! It looks so easy because it is so easy. :dblthumb2:

Just noticed my original "bug spray trick" post has hit 34,000 views! Hopefully the link I added to this write up is getting noticed and redirecting visitors here.

There was one poster here who said we are all ripping off our customers at $30-$50 (per lens? Per job?) with real restorations, while his customers are pleased with his more honest OFF! treatment at just $10...

First person I thought of was "Bamadetailing" when I saw this post. Maybe we can merge this thread with the "how to compete with gimmicky detailing" one.

The new Meguiar's Headlight Restoration System is almost as easy as the Bug Spray Trick

People are going to flip when they see it

Saw a demo last nite.....amazing

15 minutes per light....including the UV coating

Art made a video that should be up later today

:dblthumb2: Very cool! I'm looking forward to watching Art's video. :dblthumb2:

Art how great was it seeing this in action last night.

I want to do my headlights, omg I want to use that new Meguiars kit. It's killing me it's not on the market yet! It looks damn sweet.

Watching the process 1st hand, it almost seems too simple, like cheating

Megs wasn't very specific on availability last night

They wouldn't sell us any of the new stuff at the Demo

Sounded like available online in December and later available OTC, depending on when that store resets their shelves

How does the headlight refinishing products like the DP or new Meguires compare to the more traditional process of sanding & applying a clear coat (e.g. spar varnish, opt-lens, etc). Do you get similar clarity? How about durability?

I can only speak for what I witnessed and was told at the Meguiar's Event

The new two-step product from Meguiar's dos not use sand paper

A heavy compound is applied with a type of 3M ScotchBrite pad

This step removes the yellowing and leaves the lens hazy as if it had been sanded with 2000 grit

The spray sealant fills in these defects leaving a smooth clear surface

The process is so fast, it almost seems "As Seen on TV"

Clarity: looked great to me, but may have a slight Orange Peel effect if you look very, very closely

Longevity: Meguiar's indicates longevity of 1 year

Impact Damage: It dos on thick, so I imagine it will help prevent damage to the lenses from impacts, although that was not discussed at the event

Cost: the kit is $19.99 and will do 4 lights. Initially, it will be offered only as a kit, but Meguiar's indicated that if there is demand they may release the coating separately

I still can't get over how fast the process is
