Hi Folks,
I started detailing when I was 15 back in the early 70's I had to have the cars dropped off as I wasn't old enough to drive :) Luckily for me my parents had heated garage, floor drain and hot and cold softened water so I could work year around. I started out with a high speed rotary polisher and learned real quick on how easy it was to burn a paint job! Finally got the hang of a rotary and made some pretty good money on weekends especially for my age at the time and having no overhead to speak of. After moving out of my parents home and getting married we bought our own home shortly after, the guy we bought it from had the garage setup for painting cars, radiant heat and a filtered exhaust system, I had a buddy that worked at Finish Master at the time and he taught me how to paint, looking back now I wish I would have learned how to paint before self teaching myself how to wheel a car out, would have come in handy LOL. My buddy talked me into buying a Sioux wheel which I still have today, along with a orbital GEM, Flex 3401, and a Dynabrade. I used to love the look on the owners face when they came to pick up their cars, back then before the use of clear coats some of the cars would be so oxidized , burgundy, and Silver used to be really bad. :) I ended up getting a full time job in retail to pay the bills and was to busy to do any detailing like I used to except for my own vehicles, I still enjoy just doing our own vehicles today when I have the time. I can't beleive on much the industry has changed in 40 plus years with all the products that are available today. I'm really enjoying the wealth of information from all the members on AQ.
Thanks
Pete

Hello Pete, from Rochester Hills!

Welcome to AGO. What a great story. IMO we at AGO might be great a detailing (most of us), however, knowing how to paint would be something I would like to learn. I did paint a couple of times in the early 80's...but I SUCKED! Oh well, such is life....LOL

Thanks for the kind welcome you guys :) I'm located in St. Johns MI. about 20 min. north of Lansing, I know T.C very well has we have had a cabin up in Kalkaska since 1971, lot of dirt biking, Jeepin, motor boating and maybe a little alcohol consumption over the years up there. I try and make up there as much as possible.

Welcome, I am from the Metro Detroit area moved to Lenawee County 10 years ago. I worked at Finish Master at Grand River & Drake in Novi for awhile in the late 90's, I was the paint mixer. Anyways welcome to the addiction!

Welcome!! Raised in the Kalamazoo area here. Headed south to get away from the 6 month long winters.

Hahaha Texas sounds good to me Dave especially this time of the year, my family lives in AZ. and every time we get one of those so called polar vortex weather patterns like clock work I get a email or a call asking how the weather is back in MI. :( Of course in the summer months it's always my turn to twist the knife.

Welcome from NW Ohio! I spend a lot of vacation time in Michigan every year riding the orv trails and seeing the sights. I love the Traverse City area.
