Hey, I'm Jason and I'm from Hattiesburg, MS. Been lurking here for about a year now and finally joined to share my experiences with this field. I started detailing for a body shop in town back in 2010 when my stepsister's husband told me about an opening there. To be honest, I never had the interest in doing such a job, but I have an interest (some would call an obsession) with cars. So I said "what the hell", and applied. Got the job and off to cleaning cars I went.
Now, when I said that I have an interest in cars, I mean I like knowing which oem pistons or valves will swap from a ITR to GSR for max flow and whatnot. As far as detailing went, I was clueless. When I started my new job detailing, they just threw me in the detail stall and said "Go go gadget detailer!" like I knew what was going on. Washed my first car that day, then they pulled it back around and said "You forgot the wheels." I was kinda dumbfounded that they wanted me to wash the wheels too, since it seems like nobody does it around here to begin with.
But have no fear! After over 4 years in that environment I have gone from not knowing what wax was to cringing when I saw the painter try to buff out a dust nib that he sanded with 1500 grit sandpaper wrapped around a broken paint paddle, ran a small polisher with a polishing (not wool/compounding) pad at 2500rpm, with holograms and tracers all over the place. Yes, this happened on a daily basis lol.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to talking with you guys and gals in the future. Also, If anyone has any questions about body shops today, ask away. I was a parts manager near the end of my being there and have seen some pretty bad wrecks come out good as new.
