I'm brand new to the detailing world after being convinced that it made no sense to take my brand new Audi A7 to a car wash. Well, one thing led to another, and now I have grit gaurds, mitts, soap, Sonax, wheel brushes, and a Griot's 6" RA kit on the way.

I'm planning on getting started practicing this weekend on a '96 white I30 that has been well cared for, but is in need of some TLC. After that I'll tackle getting the 2000 black Jag VDP ready for market to make room for the Audi, scheduled to arrive in May.

I'm attaching a few pics of the Inifiniti--any suggestions on the best way to get started would be appreciated (my current plan is wash, wheels/wells/tires, clay, wash, Griot compound, Griot sealant, Griot Best-in-show wax). Any suggestions on how to get rid of the deep scratches in the white plastic door trim? I think they can just be wet sanded out, but I'm not sure?

Hi and welcome to Autogeek Online! :welcome:

One tip would be to start a dedicated thread with a good subject in the title to let people know what you want help with, that way you'll get more and better responses.

Right now the title to your thread reads,

Hello from Portland

So people that go to the forum home page to look at "Recent Threads" don't know you have questions about a detailing project, they just think you have a thread introducing yourself.

A tip to help yourself get great answers when you start a thread

Here's a great catch-all forum for any type of question...

If you want to use Griot's might as well get their 4 levels of polishes and that way you can use the best product for the job.

With the 6" backing plate that comes with the GG polisher then you'll want to stick with Griot's pads or 6.5" pads, I posted a link to LC's pad page here,

As for the deep scratches in the door trim, maybe look into replacements if you want them to look new?

It's going to be hard to abrade the plastic to level the surface and have it look original or new.

Thanks. The thread started as an intro, but then, like most things I seem to do, expanded in scope.

The primary purpose of detailing the I30 is practice before tackling the Jag, and ultimately maintaining the new car.

Welcome.
If you're ever up around Jantzen or PDX area or need help, I'm just across the river in the 'couv.

No problem... I see this all the time.... I posted the above all the time to this forum in my little effort to help people help themselves as I know a little bit about how discussion forums work. :D

Something I've been recommending all my life, that is...

Learn or practice on something that's not important to you before you tackle your toys...
