I've dabbled in detailing off and on for a few years, but never dedicated a lot of time to researching products. Early on, I found that Meguiars products produced great results at reasonable prices, so I used their products almost exclusively. Every now and then, I would puncuate their usage with something a little more exotic. With that being said, I'm out of everything at the moment and I just purchased a black 2003 Mustang GT with somewhat neglected paint. I come here seeking knowledge and product recommendations as I'm ready to try something new. So far, Poorboy's World has me most intrigued. I have no garage and no shady places, so the idea of being able to work with their products in direct sunlight is very appealing. This car is a daily driver, so I need something durable, but I also want it to look good. For that reason, their idea of combining a sealant with carnuba seems to be the right path. I will be using a 6" rotary. Product recommendations are welcome. Snow flurries are still flying at the moment, but I'll try to get some pictures of the paint condition soon.

I'm originally from Bentree, but currently live in Glasgow, which is about 15 miles east of Charleston.
 
Cool. I'm in Hurricane on the weekends (Thursday-Sunday) and have a garage if you want to drive over when the temps raise a little. I have a few products to try out along with a couple polishers and pads. No need to be shy.

I might take you up on that offer. Admittingly, I am an amateur, so I'm sure I could learn some valuable techniques and tips.

Back to your original post, I haven't tried Poorboy's products so if you pick those up feel free to bring them over! :D I worked on a blue 2001 GT not too long ago, the biggest pain was the sharp body lines, lots of tape required. Check out the articles by Mike Phillips to get you started. He has written many, many informative articles and I'm sure you'll pick up a few things. Don't be afraid to ask questions here either, it's a great community.

Did you find the Mustang's clearcoat to be more on the hard side or more on the soft side? Do you have any recommendations as far as pads go? I've used 3M pads in the past, but there are so many options out there and it would be nice to hear from someone who has worked on the same type of car.
 
The one I worked on wasn't as soft as the new Mustangs. I've heard from several people that the new Mustangs are crazy soft. I corrected the car using Meguiar's D300 on a 5.5" micro fiber cutting discs followed by Meguiar's M205 on a 5.5" tangerine Lake Country hydro tech pads, all on the Griot's Garage 6" Random Orbital Polisher. There were a few areas that needed wet sanding, started with Meguiar's Uni-Grit 2000 followed by 3000, then compounded with the above combo. I can't offer rotary advice, sorry.

I'm having such a hard time deciding on what to buy. I think I'm going to opt for a PC7424xp over a rotary just for safety reasons, but where I'm really torn is on the products. One side of me wants to go all in on Poorboy's World because they promote ease of use in sunlight, etc. The other side of me wants to go with Pinnacle XMT because they're reputation is solid.

I need to take some pictures of the condition of the paint. Maybe you guys can evaluate whether my swirls are severe, moderate, or mild and make a recommendation.

I also thought the Poorboys line at first, and did get some SR-1 and like it. Decided I wanted to use up some of the wax I had before buying more from AG. Finally got some DP poli seal, Max wax, and wheel cleaner and seal. Been happy with it. The Megs line has always been good too, in my opinion, and I still use some of that.

Like Mike says, "Find something you like, and use it often". Recommend getting his book for reference and good reading.
 
I still haven't placed an order. It's partly due to the fact that I haven't decided on the products and partly due to the fact that the wife thinks I've been spending too much money on the Mustang the way it is, haha. I bought a Mach 1 grille delete kit, a Mach 1 chin spoiler, and smoked headlights all in the last couple of weeks. I also had my local exhaust guy order some goodies for me, but we'll keep that between us right now!

Anyway, back to car care products. Poorboy's World has a 21-piece sample kit available for $80. I'm thinking this might be the way to go just to see how their products perform. The sample bottles are 4 oz. each and it comes with the SSR 1, 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 as well as a whole host of other products. I hope I only have to use the 1 and 2, but it would be nice to have the others on hand just in case. How many ounces of a swirl remover should I expect to use on a whole car? I'd hate to order the sample kit only to realize that it's not enough to finish.

I was finally able to hand wash the Mustang today for the first time. As the pictures below illustrate, it is currently in, what I like to call, "10 ft" condition. This, of course, means that from 10 ft away, it looks great. Upon closer inspection, you can see swirls and contamination. I don't intend to turn this car into a show car, but I want it to be the best it can be within reason. It's a daily driver and will see plenty of road abuse. I will likely have the front bumper repainted, but the rest of the car isn't beyond correction. These pictures were taken after a simple hand wash with Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax. It was evident that it has been a LONG time since this car was last waxed.
