I just found this site this week. Every time I wax I seemed to get swirl marks. Any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening?

Anyone located in Northern NJ who could give me some tips?

Thanks,

:welcome: To Autogeek Online!

Swirl marks are in the finish itself and unless corrected or removed they'll always be there. Take a good look at some of the articles written by Mike Phillips as they're very good and address many of your questions.....even the ones you haven't asked yet...

This is something I've posed several times and it covers many areas at a high level but give you an idea of what's available and some of the prices.

After reading and understanding some of the basics, the more hands on your are the quicker you'll build your knowledge and gain experience.

Everyone starts off as a beginner but with some reading, questions, and trial, error, and practice you'll be amazed how much you'll be able to do.

This link contains articles written by Mike Phillips and has allot of great reading within.

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax
Make detailing enjoyable and practice. Take your time and do not become overwhelmed. Just because there are a thousand product doesn't mean you have to use them all.

Pick one product from each category from the steps above. You already have some great waxes so you're that far ahead of the game..

Autogeek has a kit section that contains everything you need to get started. For starting off I recommend a dual action polisher. These come on a variety of flavors and Autogeek carries most of them so take your time and educate yourself.

Welcome to the Forum. As Mike usually points out, if you have detailing questions it's usually best to start a separate thread rather than try to ask in your intro thread.

There's a bunch of us here in NJ, and we've been trying to get some sort of meet going. Right now the only thing that looks to be firming up is the Poorboy's Detail Weekend tentatively set for July 2-3, in Nyack, NY (that's just over the border, so probably an hour from you).

To your problem: as BobbyG noted, there can be a lot of steps to a swirl-free finish. Is the car in question that retro T-Bird in your avatar?

I live in Flanders. It's about 15 minutes west of you. I would be happy to take a look and give you some tips. If you are interested, send me a PM.

Btw, welcome to AGO!!

Hi and welcome to the site. I used to live in Rockaway and now have a place in Dover. I know the area well. What are you using to apply and remove product?

Hey you NJ guys, keep in mind some of us have been trying to get some sort of meet going here locally, let us know if you have some juice at a garage, dealer, etc. that we might be able to use the lot/power/water/restroom some weekend.

I am using and old T shirt to apply it and a micro rag to remove it? I also dry it with a drying cloth like a shami.
