So picked up and e21 not too long ago. The paint looked pretty good for being original. It was all there and no fade or peeling. I brought it to San Francisco where its surrounded by the ocean, misty, rainy, and foggy. The car developed surface rust really quick.

I was thinking of picking up a porter cable 7424 soon to learn how to detail, and try and clean up some of the rust, and seal the rest the best I could.

I heard some of the air cooled guys who like rust and patina use a dodo juice wax to seal it? I also heard Menzerna products are good.

Any help is appreciated. Particularly from personal experience please.

We ran into the same problem when we moved our Studebaker to our house on the shoreline. The front and rear bumpers rusted within a couple months. We had to move the car about 15 miles inland. We eventually restored the entire vehicle and repainted it.

Your best bet would be to clean the car and pick up some CarPro products. I would get a 1 liter bottle of Iron X , and a 100ml bottle of iron X paste. Use the spray on Iron X, then wipe on a thin layer of Iron X paste, then use the spray again to remove what the paste dislodges. After than you are going to want to get some protection on the car immediately.

Pretty much everyone is going to recommend you use a coating. lol. I say you pick up some Hydro2 from Carpro and spray a healthy coat on the car everytime you wash it.

also, for the people who recommend you use a coating, keep in mind the car looks to be single stage paint (if indeed the paint is original), and coatings were designed for clear coat paint only. they dont hold up on single stage.

hope that helps.

Cquartz Nano Coating, Car Pro Car Care Products, Iron X Iron Remover, Reload

I forgot to ask., are you going for the rusted look ? This has become a real niche at the shows lately. lol if so, dont use the iron X on the paint as its gonna help remove the majority of it.

Yeah I want to clean the rust as much as possible, and clean / polish the paint, then seal it as much as I can until I can afford a paint job someday

+1 for IronX, awesome stuff, but be prepared for the smell - it's wretched.

I read up on the iron X wash, and the paste. It seems like they do the same thing? Or am I wrong?

Also, in the product description it says "Note: Iron X should not be used on bare metal parts, brake calipers, wheel balancing weights, or SMART paint repairs. Mask off these areas. Avoid letting Iron X dry on any surface." Does anyone know what will happen? A couple areas of my trunk almost look bare?

After all this what would be good to seal the car with?

Thanks again guys

I did try Iron X on my rusted wheel, nothing changes much until now...good for paint..but on rusted wheel..is another story :(

so you have had good success with sealing the car with that product?

I've only used it on base coat clear coat or 3 stage paint, but it was put on the clear coat.

I was thinking Collinite 476s for it's durability but then thought since the car is old. There are cracks, etc... in the paint and then trim, and would have to be dealing with the hassle of doing extra unnecessary work IMO. Meguiar's Ultimate Wax is more user friendly.

You could go Menzerna PL but it costs more, a little does go a long way though.

I like Meguiar's Ultimate Wax because it is OTC, and has a higher gloss than something like Collinite 476s.

But yes I have had great success with Meguiar's Ultimate Wax

Thanks! I have already purchased a small can of the dodo wax to sample it, it will try the meguires next

Well in that case you should be good there and just stick with that. IMO there is no need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on waxes, I was just trying to find an easy affordable option for you.

Looks promising,

Dodo Juice Supernatural Hybrid Paste Sealant bridges the gap between a paste car wax, the company's specialty, and a paint sealant. With Supernatural Hybrid, you get the user experience and shine of a premium carnauba paste but the longevity and durability of a paint sealant all in one jar. For detailers who enjoy the performance of Dodo Juice waxes but wish for longer lasting paint protection, Supernatural Hybrid is the answer!

So what makes Dodo Juice Supernatural Hybrid Paste Sealant unique? It's not a mass produced, cheaply made synthetic car wax. Supernatural Hybrid is a low volume, handmade product crafted with high quality ingredients. It provides the user experience of Dodo Juice's other paste waxes but with superior durability. It's a great option for professional detailers or enthusiasts who desire longevity, as well as a glossy carnauba shine. Dodo Juice Supernatural Hybrid Paste Sealant provides 4-6 months of paint protection.
