Hello everyone! I have been reading this forum for quite a while but don't post very much at all.

I am a Computer Science student who is trying to build their portfolio and thought that a detailing related website would be a good idea as it blends my two favorite hobbies: detailing and programming. If you are willing, take a quick 4 question survey which can help me decide whether or not this website is a good idea! The details of the website are in the survey.

If you choose to take the survey, I really appreciate it! Please be honest, I don't want to invest my time into something that other detailers wouldn't use. Also, please only take the survey once.

Link to the survey: Click here!

(I figured this isn't against forum rules as the external link isn't a competing website)

I took a stab at the survey. Here's wishing you the best of luck.

I love the idea of a resource like this. I think the only caveat I'd mention is that nothing can overstate the importance of eyes & hands-on experience. BMWs and Porsches come to mind as an example of this, and Corvettes too.... Sometimes two of the same car with the same finish will correct VERY differently. Then, of course, if you add the possibility of body & repaint work, all generalizations go out the window. Finally, and while I think this is becoming more and more the exception, point of manufacture/assembly can be an issue. I can't remember the model year (early 2000's, I think), but I happened to do two Toyota Avalons back to back. One had been manufactured in Japan, and couldn't have been easier to correct. The other was put together domestically, and had some of the hardest clear I'd ever worked on.

Variables/exceptions....as an IT guy by day, I appreciate that they can be the thorn of an otherwise excellent plan. :)

I have been concerned about that. If I go through with the idea, I will probably just make each page about the car in general (i.e. don't take different manufacturing locations into account). I feel that having a separate section for each different manufacturing location would just make the website difficult to use. After all, the real purpose of the website is just to build my portfolio.

I did it, good luck:)

Thanks, I appreciate it!

the only thing I need is the actual square footage of a vehicle's paint so I can estimate time and I can show a customer that their SUBURBAN ISN'T A MIATA and why it will cost you triple!

Just finished the survey. Good luck.

That's an interesting idea. I found a website online that gives the height, length, and width measurements of most cars. I could probably write a script that scrapes this data and calculates a very rough estimation of the square footage, assuming doing this isn't against the TOS of the website.

I also wonder if there is any other demand for this feature?

Just finished the survey. Good luck.

I really appreciate it, thanks!
