I just thought this thread should resurface again for the Jr members...:xyxthumbs:

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. You learn the acronym and what it "means" and you don't then disassemble it into its spelled-out form every time you read it. By the same token you would advocate ER doctors not using acronyms/abbreviations or police or military or ATC (uh oh, another acronym) not using codes in their radio transmissions because it takes longer and causes confusion?? Anyway, I understand your concern for newbs and if I feel I'm posting to someone who isn't going to understand the acronyms then I spell them out.

as far as the er doctors using acronyms, they aren't allowed to use certain ones per the joint commission. So yes, when dealing with my health, I would like them to spell out less frequently used ones to avoid confusion. There are so many acronyms for all the different diseases/meds/procedures it's almost impossible to know them all.

The military is famous for using acronyms, so much so they even have/had a dictionary for it...NAVTRMDIC*. An acronym for an acronym.

Thanks to JimmyJam for posing the question. I, too, ran into walls trying to decipher some of the meanings of not too often used acronyms and was too embarrassed to ask. Thanks also to Dougaross for posting the cool chart. It's like the Rosetta stone for newbies like me.
