I am totally new to this forum. I have these semi-swirl / semi-holograms on the sides of my black 2013 4-Runner. You can only really see them in direct sunlight, like when one side is directly facing the sun. I have never used an electric buffer on it and have only started noticing them within the past couple of months. They are ugly though. What are they and how do I get rid of them? Thanks in advance.

They are swirls and holograms. The swirls are from washing and drying improperly. The holograms are from the misuse of a rotary polisher. Where are you located? Maybe a forum member can help you out.

Thank you very much. I am in North Alabama. I have read so many different things on what to use. I was using a terry cloth towel for washing. I was rinsing it constantly but realized it had the "hard" edges on it. I have always used a synthetic shammy to dry. Now I have gone to a microfiber cloth for washing with no edges and the same shammy for drying. What should I be using to wash and dry?

Howdy and welcome. If you think you will enjoy detailing, and are willing to invest some money we can make some recommendations. Do you have any tools or friends with tools? Nathan

Ditch the shammy IMO. Use a Micro fiber towel specifically for drying. AGO sells some great Microfiber towels, there are other brands too. I think that will help a lot there is quite a bit more to learn but the towels are a great start

IMHO, the best thing to do first before any correction is visit the documentation and how-to's page and watch all the Mike Phillips Videos.
Download free detailing handbook guides, how-to videos, free wallpapers, and free screensavers!

The terry cloth would have been good during a restore of a single stage paint but not for clear-coat. That plus the shammies are what got you into this jam.

The videos will show proper washing techniques using the two bucket system and proper products, along with videos on dual action buffers, pads, claying and proper scratch removal techniques.

Drying can add more scratches if not done correctly. Use high-end products to dry such as The Guzzler. Lightly prime your dry towel with a QD spray.

Clay using premium clay and a clay lubricant

When removing scratches and swirls always start with a test spot first!
Also, always start with the "least aggressive product".

A PC7424xp along with a Lake Country Pad starter kit is the perfect dual action (DA) buffer package to start with. It rotates and oscillates and is perfectly safe. Follow Mike's videos.

Start with a cutting pad and (for example) a Pinnacle Scratch & Swirl Remove. Watch Mike's video's for proper technique.

Next step would be a finer polish (i.e. Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish). with a polishing pad.

Lastly using a softer finishing pad apply wax. You should see results instantly.

If you don't have a lot of time, you can always start with HD Speed which is an "All in one" (AIO), Scratch/Swirl Remover + Polish & Sealant (synthetic wax). You should get great results from that.

Lastly, take lots of pictures and be sure to post them here so we can all marvel at the great job you're doing! :-)

Welcome to the forum and a lot of fun. Not mentioned so far is washing using a microfiber cloth. Use a microfiber wash mitt instead. I really like Meguiars Microfiber Wash Mitt: Meguiars X3002 Microfiber Wash Mitt

If you lived closer I would invite you over, open my detailing cabinet and let you have fun.

Good luck to you and have fun.

I really appreciate all of the help and responses. I figured out that I work with a member here and he has volunteered to help teach me more about all I was lacking. I will post pics.
thanks again.....
