My customer has a 2010 SL65 AMG Black Series coupe. Now that he has a storage facility for his cars, I can finally start working on polishing the car.

The car is in extremely rough shape, some of the worst swirls and halograms I've seen.

Anyways, I knew the clear coat was soft, but after doing some test sections, I am in shock at how soft the paint really is. I was using brand new microfibers (Autosmart yellow MFs from Amazon) and they were still marring the paint. I then switched over to the Eurow Shag towels and got a little better results. Even taping off the hood emblem induced scratches, seriously!

I'm afraid that I am going to be inducing more scratches once I start moving around the car and correcting the defects. I want to get the paint as close to perfection as possible, since the only protection I can see using on this vehicle is Opti-Coat or Aquartz.

Any advice as I tackle this thing? I know the process I'm going to use for removing the defects, but any advice for removing polish without inducing more scratches would be appreciated. I'm going to be ordering some coating products, so if I need to try a different towel, I can order something that yall recommend.

Thank you in advance for your help, this is a very very nice car and I really want to make it right again.

I wish I had this problem....
In all honesty this is out of ny league.

Sent from my SGH-i917 using Board Express

I have a car with the same problem. Even after careful washing, I end up marring the paint. I ended up doing a full correction using these products.

Meguiars Mirror Glaze #105 Ultra-Cut Compound 32 oz. New D.A. Version

Menzerna Power Finish PO 203, one step polish, swirl remover, finishing polish, car polish, german car polish, menzerna polishing compounds, power

Menzerna Nano Polish PO 106 FA, Menzerna Final Polish, Nano abrasives, finishing polish, professional polish

Menzerna Polish PO85RD, Mernzerna 85rd, Menzerna finish po85rd

In that order. The only towel that didn't mar the paint in the process were these:
Cobra Gold Plush Jr. Microfiber Towel, gold detail cloth, buffing towel, microfiber buffing towel, micro fiber

Topped with souveran looked amazing. I am going to try Opti coat 2.0 on the paint shortly to see if it's anti-scratcing properties will help with this super soft paint.

All polishing was done with a PC also.

I have always found mb clear to be rock hard, so this is very surprising. Only tip I can add is to spray some qd on the panel when you go to remove the polishing residue. It should add some lubrication and help prevent inducing swirls back into the paint. Good luck!

My dads car had the same problem. It was a sl500 I'll respond more when I get home so I don't have to type out everything on the phone but I asked the same question. Ended up using m66 or m105 on a finishing pad

Sorry I said the wrong item. I used M205 and M66 on a megs finishing pad. This really did the trick to get all those marring marks out of the paint that a polishing pad or M105 would leave. Even the glazes were leaving some kind of marring marks. You couldn't see them in direct sunlight, but you could see them under certain man made lights.

Here is a link to a thread on that car.

The car is actually carbon fiber weave that is painted. Not sure if that has anything to do with the process/products the factory used.

I have M135 synthetic detailer, do you think that would suffice for removing the polish, or do you recommend a different QD? Thank you.

Interesting. As for the QD I have never used that product so I can't comment. On a car I did a few months ago I unded up using Opti-clean to wipe the polish off. It was the only thing I found with enough lubrication to keep th surface from marring.

On my soft clear problem I found any napped MF regardless of plushness left marring, even using a QD. Quite by accident I discovered WW and FK425 to be the best solution. The small Cobra Guzzler worked better than anything else for me.

Interesting TL. I have always had the opposite be true for me. When even my pakshaks are marring I grab for my nappiest towel I can find and wipe with as little pressure as possible. Usually my Showroom FX towels get the job done without marring the finish. I will have to give a WW towel a try next time I have this problem.
