I wet sanded it with 2000 grit until the film was gone.Honestly this is the first time I've clear coated anything other than a table or a goalie mask so I was REALLY nervous about removing any of the base coat. I then evened it out by wet sanding the rest of the hood so that there was no evidence of the spotting that was taking place. As you can see in the original picture on this post, the major failure was from the front of the hood to the middle. It had held together on the rest of the hood but I figured if I got rid of what was failing and a little more I'd have a better chance of NOT having the paint fail again after I did it.

Thanks. It was very frustrating going back and forth with GM, especially since the original body shop wanted a whopping $650 for the repair. At this rate I'll have it done for under $50 with my own equipment and it will be an essential learning tool for me. It took a lot for me to do this but I finally just figured I had nothing to really lose. If it came out like trash I'd have to get it sprayed anyway. May as well learn something from it.

Just wanted to update - I wasn't able to get the results I was looking for (yet). Essentially after sanding the affected areas down to the base coat and sanding the rest of the hood so that the new clear would have something to bond to the paint did not dry as evenly as I had hoped and after wet sanding and buffing I was only able to get a moderate shine out of it. I am photo-documenting everything for this project as I am not giving up on it.

You need 2K clear. This is clear coat with hardener. Once you mix the hardener in, it's only good for 24 hours.

2K clear is very toxic, you absolutely must wear a respirator mask when using it. You should wear safety goggles too.

11.9 ounce 2K clearcoat has the durability and gloss of a urethane clearcoat, with the convenience of an aerosol. This product contains isocyanates which are toxic to the respiratory system. A respirator mask is mandatory when using this product, or any product with isocyanates. To use: Remove the button from the top of the can and place it into the bottom and push hard. This punctures a bag releasing the isocyanate catalyst into the urethane clearcoat. Shake for 2 minutes to ensure the two components are thoroughly mixed. Once this can is activated the pot life is 24 hours. When you sprayed the clear, did you wait 10-15 minutes between coats? Did you overlap coats? Did you do 3-4 coats?

The 2k may be the next step. I gave each coat 20 minutes before applying and the total was 4 coats. I actually waited nearly a month before wet sanding and buffing. There ar areas where it looks great but most if it is just not as glossy as I would like or expected. Not worrying. If at first you don't succeed.... Besides, even if it doesn't come out the way I want it's still better than it looked AND it gives me time to set aside the cash for a respray. Thanks for the link to the clear though. It may be the final step. Absolutely nothing to lose.

You're welcome. 20 minutes is too long in dry weather in my opinion. 10 minutes for dry weather. You want the coats going on wet, and tacky not fully dry. Read the label directions too. I think it's 30 minutes after the last base coat (or mid coat) then 10 minutes between clear coats. Good luck!

I have to do this soon as well, though on a smaller panel. That's why I became interested and started researching the topic.

No those masks are not recommended. Get a dual cartridge respirator. I even saw them at Home Depot in the paint dept. They cost between $15-$40. Usually around $20 or $30. Definitely not something to skimp on.

Also I recommend safety goggles like these Dewalts, for full coverage:

It's deadly. If 2K urethane paint is inhaled, the little paint droplets can catalyze on the villi of your lungs, and permanently reduce your breathing capacity. There was a guy who painted his car in his garage without a mask, and he had to be rushed to the hospital, where the doctors told him there was nothing they could do for him. It's something medicine can't fix. He was dead the next day.

Gm is totally messing with you.
Basically they are trying to get money off of you with a warranty and they will not fix your paint. Do not give them money anymore, I would file a complaint with the BBB or directly with GM
