So I'm an idiot, my Escape is stuck in park. Last night I was playing with my products in the garage and had the radio on. I ended up draining the battery so I figured I would jump it in the morning no biggy right? Well I needed to move the vehicle out of the driveway. My plan was to put it in neutral and coast it down the driveway and park it on the side. It's uphill and when I went to put it in park I didn't hit the break. So now all the weight of the car is on the parking break. Tried to hit the release button, didnt work. The shifter is stuck and I tried the rocking back and fourth method, that also didnt work because It's uphill and I don't have enough power to push it back up further to release the pressure. I called a buddy of mine, he's going to be here later with his truck and some chains. My plan is to pull the vehicle uphill with his truck and try to disengage it that way.

Anyone think this would work? Could I try something else? Google says check the fuses, but I know it's not the fuse.

IDK if chains are necessary. I would just get some strong friends and push that baby while one of you pops it into neutral.

Same thing happened to my poor mom who doesn't use her parking break....

WHen my friend gets here I will try that first. My gf is here now but shes not much help lol I'm in the doghouse at the moment lol

I had to release a 06 Dodge dakota that put put parked againt a curb. What happened was when the operator stopped the vehicle it was completley againt the curb. So much so that the part of the tire that was against the curb was half flat in the contact spot. When I got in the truck the same thing happened as you described. To release it I did the normal proceedure to move into reverse but the Linkage wouldnt move. I hade to put so much force on the lever almost to the point of breaking the linkages and then it finally released. And when it did the truck bounced off the curb.

Im not sure this method will work for you and this is just info to pass along. I hope it works out for you and you dont break anything.

I would jump start the car so you will have braking if you get it out of park. That way you can stop it in case you have a problem rolling down the hill again.

I was supposed to do a customers car today lol but it rained and we scheduled it for wed. I guess the rain helped in a way? I didn't want to call her and tell her that I can't because my vehicle is stuck lol

I jumped it this morning. The car starts fine now. It's just stuck in park now.

Get your GF to shift while you push

Make sure she has the key in the ON position and tell her to get ready to hit the brakes when the car comes out of gear

You might wanna have someone film this ;)

lol My girlfriend just read that and said "if I don't press the break will it run you over?" I said yes... she replied "ok just making sure".... lol

Anyways I couldn't do it alone. In a few minutes a few people will be here to help lol thx guys

very good point.

Make sure you get that foot on the break right away. Or your friends probably won't help you with anything again lol.

Well, how could they? They'd be dead.... :nomore:

Make sure she hasn't taken any life insurance policies out on you lately.

I'm shocked no one has suggested long jumper cables yet....

well it woked..ish... got it unstuck. 3 guys rocking back and fourth didnt work so we used a chain to pull it backwards slowly. It poped out but now the shifter is wacky. dosent go into park so the key is still in it. the shifer dosent indicate correctly what gear its in. Im thinking the cable needs to be adjusted. Were gonna have someone look at it.

I wish you lived closer. Sounds like you messed up the linkage. Hopefully that's it, and not the parking pawl itself.

Just for future reference, rocking doesn't help for this, you need to release the pressure on the parking pawl. So your friends just needed to push it uphill just slightly...if you push it too far the other way you theoretically could have the same problem, which might have been what happened with the chain. Probably would have been better for 4 of you to push and your gf in the car.
