I ran across an article saying Hertz will start using waterless wash for it's fleet. Interestingly they had some company I never heard of think up a "proprietary" cleaning solution. It looked the same like lots of the waterless products here on Autogeek so I thought I'd paste the press release I found for thoughts.

Hertz To Save Millions of Gallons of Water Annually by Introducing a Waterless Car Wash Process

PARK RIDGE, N.J., Nov. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continued effort to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations, The Hertz Corporation (NYSE: HTZ) rolled out a waterless, non-toxic "green clean" car washing process at more than 220 neighborhood locations across the United States. As one of the largest car rental companies in the world, Hertz plans to expand this to all viable neighborhood locations in the United States and Europe in 2014, making waterless car washing available to nearly 3,700 locations which could save more than 130,000,000 gallons of car wash water annually.

"Managing one of the largest car rental fleets in the world requires a significant amount of car washing," commented Hertz Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mark P. Frissora. "Moving to a waterless car wash system is another innovative way Hertz is addressing both its sustainability and business needs. We have been able to achieve significant environmental and cost savings while continuing to offer customers the best fleet in the industry."

Keeping with Hertz's high-quality service standards for cleanliness and customer satisfaction, this new process ensures that cars are detailed properly while both conserving water and avoiding toxic cleaners. Hertz worked with Green Team Partners, LLC ("Green Team Partners") to develop a non-toxic, biodegradable and hyper-concentrated waterless car wash formula and dispenser, which reduced the product volume by 79 percent and resulted in a 77 percent reduction in shipping and transport costs over non-concentrated solutions.

"We were very excited to bring our processes and products to Hertz and even more thrilled when Hertz adopted our waterless detailer program for its fleet," commented Max Krumer, President of Green Team Partners. "To see a large organization put such great emphasis on going green and investing in sustainability efforts is amazing, and we're glad to be part of Hertz's efforts."

An entire car can be washed with 6 to 8 ounces of a proprietary, environmentally friendly, fully biodegradable solution, in approximately 8 minutes. After the solution is sprayed onto the car, the specially formulated molecules envelop the dirt particles, lifting them away from the car's paint. A high quality microfiber towel is then used to wipe the lifted dirt particles off the surface. A second clean microfiber towel is used to polish the surface, leaving behind a shiny protective coating that preserves the clear coat and paint.

Environmental sustainability, Hertz's Living Journey, is integrated throughout the Company, from its car washes to the way its rental locations are built. Hertz is committed to its sustainability efforts -- both from a fleet and operations perspective -- and prides itself as a market leader in sustainable transport and operations. As Hertz redesigns its facilities, the company is introducing specific sustainable construction and design highlights, including LEED certification at select sites, the use of LED and energy efficient lighting, solar power systems and solar outdoor lighting at select sites, post-consumer recycled content materials and finishes, water saving fixtures and zero-VOC paints. Hertz is also rolling out a national single-stream recycling program in addition to current recycling efforts around automotive waste oils and tires. Other Hertz Living Journey outcomes include production of 2.5M kWh of solar energy annually and sustainable mobility solutions. More than 75% of the company's fleet averages 28+ MPGs and the Green Traveler Collection offers a variety of alternate fuel vehicles, including Electric Vehicles, Clean Diesels, Compressed Natural Gas vehicles and hybrids.

Hertz has been recognized for its sustainability achievements as well including Zagat's "Best Green Options", Global Business Travel Association's "Sustainable Innovation Award", Swedish Association of Green Motorists' "Most Environmentally Friendly Car Rental Company", and Fleet News UK's "Environmental Award."

I see a lot of rental cars looking even worse. Scratches, marring, gouges. The "detailer" at Hertz likely isn't using 600gsm towels folded in 4s. Wheels and tires will never be cleaned - at least now they probably get hosed off. I dunno. I've got some rental cars that were just horrendously "detailed", then you look at the odometer and they have like 3k miles on them. Abuse. Horror.

They aren't taken care of very well in the first place so this isn't going to make them look any worse. Most of my rentals have had huge scratches/stains so marring really isn't going to be a deal breaker for any of their customers.

They may as well clean them with hammers and chisels.

Well at least it's more environmentally friendly, I'm all for preserving the earth anyway I can....

Just as long as the condition of a rental vehicle was well documented prior to my picking it up; and as a customer:
I never worried about how a rental vehicle's paint finish looked. That was up to the rental car company.
I really didn't ever care...Just as long as it got me to my appointed meetings and back.

It wasn't like I was ever going to detail it or something!
Not my job back then. Not my job now.

Good for them.

Traditional washing in that sort of volume environment is a huge waste of water.

They go a crappy job of taking care of the paint anyhow, so might as well save some water while they are at it.

I wonder how much water this will save? Pretty much all rental car companies i've seen use an automated car wash which recycles water. Maybe the waterless wash was designed for low volume Hertz dealerships that don't have the funds for an automated wash.

Either way, glad to see Hertz stepping up to reduce water consumption. They always seem to be the most innovative. I always check Hertz first because they offer high end and sports cars.

What's the difference between a rental car and a jeep ?

The rental car will go anywhere.

Every rental car I ever got always looked like they used windex and paper towels anyway. This should be an improvement.

Too damn funny :cry:2 to 3 years ago I would get DESTROYED on AG for even mentioning drywash aka waterless wash..... and now it is being implemented in large corporation processes - Just the start guys, I promise you :) Keep Bashing - see ya in the future :buffing:

Now if they could do something about the roach problems...

I went on a two day one night business trip once to Kauai. Figured, since it's only one night, i'll sleep in the car at a beach. Woke up at 2am to find hundreds of roaches all over me, the dash, doors, a/c vents, everything. I'm not squeamish about roaches, but when i woke up from a deep sleep with them all over me, i couldn't help but scream like a little girl.

I live close to a Hertz and have seen them cleaning with a green tinted WW. They use one towel to wash multiple cars, they have about a dozen cars on the lot.

I heard from a little bird they are using 3D products for this process? I'm assuming Total or the 3D equivalent.

Edit: looks like the 3D version. Theirs is green.

I am surprised that they have not been doing this earlier.

Seems like waterless washes are waaaaay more expensive than doing a rinseless. Your normal rinseless uses what, 4 gallons, what does an old school hose method use I wonder? I'm sure they'll buy the waterless in bulk but my God its going to cost a lot of money. Nothing wrong with saving the environment but it does come at a cost and surely that cost will be passed on to the consumers.

I don't get the craze to save water...... other than saving $$$$

Its God given.... falls from the sky.

What we runoff goes back into the earth or evaporates into the atmosphere and then it rains again.....

Also if global warming is true then we have more water not less?

Wow you're pretty smart with your global warming hypothesis.

You need to open up your scope a little. Just because you're from NC doesn't mean water usage and (lack of) conservation is the same elsewhere.
