Hey guys,

I am relatively new to the detailing game, working with mainly OTC products and a few things I have picked up from here. I have recently bought a 2001 Galaxy Blue Volkwagen Jetta and am about to buy a porter cable to help clean up the paint. The hood is oxidized pretty bad as is the roof, appearing to be almost light blue instead of navy. Is the anything you guys would recommend specifically to help get this out as much as possible.

Here is the only photo I could find at this time.

Thanks for having me!!

I fear the hood and roof are clear coat failure, can you take some pictures of them and place them!

Great cars, hopefully we can get you in the right direction.

Like Aaron touched on, it might be clearcoat failure as clearcoats don't usually have an oxidation problem but problems with swirls. Most people confuse clear coat failure with oxidation but there two different things.

Single stage paints like what came on a 1965 Mustang will oxidize and the problem is just the upper surface of the paint is deteriorating. This can be fixed by removing a little bit of the paint off the surface to expose a fresh base.

Clear coat paints will deteriorate throughout the entire matrix or thickness of the clear layer of paint. You can't fix it by abrading the surface because the problem isn't just on the surface, it's throughout the entire layer.

Old single stage paints are easy to fix and in my opinion fun to work on.

Huge difference in paint systems between these two cars.
