Hi everyone, just signed up and i am looking for a little information. I found the site while I was trying to figure out how to make my cars better. I got more confused. So hopefully I will get straigned out!

My situation is this 2 cars 2007 ford edge and 2000 ford explorer. Both cars have not been heavily detailed in a while. I try to wash them every 2 weeks with Meguiar's Gold class. Insides are ok. It is the paint and headlights that I need to address.

I am not looking to win anything I just want to protect my investment. I have always used Meguir's int he past, but right not bot need some more tlc then just wax. I know that it will take time, but I do not have 10 hours to do 2 cars. Just not able. Because of this, looking through all the different brands, that I have never heard of, and options you have here. Some things I never knew existed, synthetic, carnauba, pinnacle, Wolfgang, DP, Mothers,3M, Meguire's....... AHHHHHHHH.

So I have figured I need synthetic becasue I live in Chicago and not garaged for either car. the 07 Edge is goes to job sites as my wife works construction. So it would work longer then "real" wax. Next they both need something to get the scratches, RIDS and swirls off. Polish, compound, glaze or cleaner wax?????????? Who knows. I have looked at the kits and the best one for me, as I am the type of person that if you tell me what to do I will do it and follow your directions, is the 3M kit, simple to follow and sounds like it does a good job. has anybody used it?

For the headlights, I was going to use the Meguir's but learning I need a sealer, so any good feedback?

I am not able to spend a fortune, so looking for some suggestions.

Thanks!

Hello there fellow Chicago-ian!

Now when you say you wash the cars every 2 weeks and they haven't had any real attention, well, its probably going to take 10 hrs to get one ride up to par, 2 cars 10 hrs would be a real quick once over and based off of what your looking for, well, I feel that's not what your looking for honestly.

Once you spend a little quality time and get them up to par then its all about maintence. Cars sitting outside are going to be punished especially hard, you get what you put into them. Where do live in the area?

Well my 00 is going to take longer I know, but 10 hours just on the exterior? I am not sure what I should be looking for, I guess that is the first problem. I think the previous owner did some work on the finish, it is relativity smooth, not gritty so I am not thinking I would need to clay it? DW, 07 is going to take more work I know.

Yes this is going to be the worst, t get them up to spec. I want to get it done before winter or at least something before winter on the finishes. We live in Aurora.

Thanks everyone for the welcome, hope to learn a lot!

No idea what a baggie test is yet. I am thinking a 6" orbital rotary. Do not have a lot of extra $$$ right now.

After you wash your car put your hand in a plastic baggie...like a sandwich baggie and run your fingers over the paint. If it feels nice and smooth your fine...probably not going to be smooth...then after you clay do the same test...unbelievable difference. I'm fairly new to this as well. If your going to use a rotary it would be a good idea to get a scrap panel and practice on it...very easy to burn the paint...or buff through the clear.
