I’ve been a “Car Guy” since I was a youngster rolling toy cars around on the floor My Grandmother started giving me Dinky cars in the early 50’s. That developed into a collection that was followed up by a collection of Matchbox cars and, when I was old enough, I began building my own plastic model cars, painting each piece of the engines the appropriate color. Wish I had them now!
I also wish I still had some of the real cars that I’ve owned over the years since. Sometimes I felt like I took better car of those cars than I did of myself! Early on, when still in HS, most of that care, however, simply involved weekly washes, drying with the family bath towels, and a thorough vacuuming. Then, twice a year, I’d throw on a coat of OTC wax.
I never got too serious about the idea of long-term maintenance because I rarely kept a car beyond 40-45,000 miles. About 30 years ago, I did get it into my head that I would get a car with the potential of being a collectible; something that I could fix up and enjoy on sunny days. Ended up with 2 Mercedes Benz 190SL’s. Didn’t want 2 necessarily, but the seller had 2, and he gave me a “deal”. Well, I was busy with my career, rarely had time for the cars, and kept them for a couple of years, first selling one, and then the other a few years later.
What’s led me to AG is a recent decision to get another car that was either an antique from the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s, or a later car that would have the same potential for collectability as those 190SL’s. Looked at several cars over a period of about a year and, although I wasn’t looking for another Mercedes, I recently purchased a 1989 560SL. It’s a very nice car that’s been well maintained. It has only 26,000 miles, is in very nice shape, and I’d like to keep it that way so that I can enjoy it during the nice weather now that I’m retired.
Long story short (well, not that short), I stumbled upon AG while doing a search for the right kind of products to use. After much reading of threads with various reviews and comments about this and that, I ended up with a Leatherique kit, a Raggtopp kit, a 3-stage "wax" kit, some chrome polish, and a bunch of assorted sundries to apply and remove everything.
Since receiving my order, I’ve cleaned and sealed the top, rejuvenated and cleaned the leather, put on 3 coats of “wax”, and polished the chrome. The only thing I haven’t yet dome is get something to brighten up the rubber bumpers and trim. However, I think I like what I’ve read about either Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus or the comparable version from Poorboys.
I look forward to leaning lots more as time goes by and I’m grateful to all of you for getting me off to a good start!
