High speed Autobahn driving

I have some great memories of driving the Autobahns when I would travel there form where I was stationed in the UK.

The one that runs between Munich and Salzburb and the one between Frankfurt and Ramstien were two of my favorites. The Autobahn/Autostrada that takes you south out of Munich into Austria and down into Italy is pretty cool too.

The two things that stood out to me beyond the speed is the incredible discipline of the drivers (Northern Europeans at least) and the fantastic condition of the roads. Nothing in the US comes close.

Yes sir. The Germans have incredible discipline while driving and it shows. I would much rather share the road with the Germans than my fellow Americans. No disrespect to anyone.

:dblthumb2:Thought i would share too =) Wife on the A5 outside of Baden Baden, Germany(269km/h - 167mph) and driving on the Ring.

Right on! Is that a competition package equipped M5 you have...?

I have been on the Autobahn and surprised it was a 4 lane divided highway but they did move.

When you get into bigger cities such as Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin etc. the amount of lanes adjust accordingly.

He didn't say how much it was for..... But it was completely in German... Good thing thing he sprechen ze deutsch Im the MAN

:xyxthumbs:

Most drivers in the US can't drive..... No formal training or anything.

Yes it's a joke defiantly....

And it shows.....

It sure does.

Autobahn isn't a good word around here this week Mike. My wife has a lady that works for her that's originally from Germany. She called Saturday night in a panic, jumping the first flight out to head back to Germany.

Her sister was in a horrific accident Saturday, 27 broken bones, 3 surgeries so far, and in an induced coma. She's coming home this weekend, even though her sister isn't even beginning to come out of the woods yet. She just cannot afford to take any more time off work.

Any prayers (from all that care to send them that way) I'm sure will find there way to her.

Thanks guys!

Tony

My apologies Tony. My wishes go out to them.

Mike

These days the usual fee for a drivers license is around 2000 €, give or take a few.
And 40% of the different german Autobahnen are in fact speed limited, especially around the bigger cities where high traffic is common.
And i don't know with what you compare the Autobahn, but there are a lot of different ones which are considered in dire need of a major overhaul by a lot of people who use them on a daily basis.

That is cheaper than I have heard. Does that include the farschule?

I don't doubt that most areas are limited. I am located in the western area just above Trier. I am really close to Bitburg. The Autobahn were these pictures where taken are from A1. This is a newer Autobahn and 90% of it is unlimited between Trier and the Belgium border.

But the Autobahn is still in better shape than most highways in the U.S.

AWESOME! We have been trying to get orders to Spangdahlem since my wife got in. Her career field is limited on overseas slots though. I have driving the Autobahn on my bucket list, and I'm not getting any younger! HAHA

Awesome experience! Thanks for sharing.

Sorry to hear that Tony.... Sending healing thoughts and prayers.

Right on! Would be cool to have you here. We can run the Autobahn and Nurburgring together. What do you drive?

What is your wife's Specialty code? I am a 2T3, Vehicle mechanic.

Awesome experience! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! No problem.

I have a couple dodges, ram with a hemi, and a journey for hauling kids. My toy is a Nissan 200sx ser. It has built engine and gt 35r Turbo, makes around 435 HP on 25# of boost!

Yes, this including everything.
If someone really pays 5-6 thousand Euros he better never get the drivers license in Germany ever, because this means that he's using far more lessons in the Fahrschule than really needed.

Well, try the Autobahn around Cologne or Düsseldorf or in the Ruhrgebiet, or take the A61 from Kreuz Kerpen down to Koblenz.

The Autobahn ring around Cologne is most of the time limited to 100 km/h or 120 km/h, same around Düsseldorf and the A61 is most of the time limited to 130 km/h for more than 150 km, maybe even more.

And take a look at a lot of bridges on the Autobahn. For example, the Rheinbrücke (Rhein bridge) at Leverkusen is broken beyond repair and needs to be rebuild entirely. Same for a lot more bridges.
The A44 from Autobahnkreuz Aachen up to Triangle Jackerath (right where it goes into the A61 from Venlo Netherlands down to the A4 at Kreuz Kerpen) was a major piece of sh*t and is under total reconstruction at the moment.

Specialists in Germany are estimating the needed repair investments in the german Autobahn to more than 200% of what is actually invested each year. That's why politicians are actually talking about the "Maut" which is a yearly fee for using the Autobahn just like in Austria f.e.

If you guys make it over you are authorized to ship one vehicle at gov't expense. If you are both military then you can ship two. But if it is just her then you would pay out of pocket to ship the second and so on.

Bring the Journey at gov't expense and pay for your toy to come over. Leave the rest at home. You wouldn't want to drive the Ram around here as the roads and parking is not that big. Besides you wouldn't want to run that pickup at a constant high rate of speed anyhow. Unless you have the SRT10. There are a few knuckle heads over here that bring their big lifted diesel trucks with lift kits, mud tires, and extended towing mirrors. I pass these clowns like they are standing still on the Autobahn.

Oh wow.

I have not made it to those areas that you have mentioned yet. When going to Ramstein, a lot of that route is un restricted as well.

Here I go again, but I thought you guys were already paying the "Maut"?

BTW, are you located in Cologne?

It is actually illegal to hang out in the left lane no matter how fast you are traveling.

American dummy (me) driving on the Autobahn in a 3cyl rented Fiat in the left lane. Munich to Berchtesgaden. Accelerator was floored - car maxed out maybe at 95mph. Out of the blue comes the biggest blackest Mercedes I've ever seen flying up my butt at like 200mph.

I almost got killed that day. I learned not to drive in the left lane in a Fiat 3cyl there.

No, the Maut is still in discussion. We pay taxes for actually having a motored vehicle, no matter if it's a car, a motorcycle of any kind or a truck. Some special cars are exempt from paying taxes.

And no, i'm not located in Cologne, but in Eschweiler, which is 50 km west of Cologne, but i have a lot of customers in Cologne and Leverkusen and therefor i drive there almost every day. ;)

Sorry to hear this. Will keep her in our prayers

Thanks guys, here's a big :grouphug: to you all.
Not a lot of forums where one would share news like this.
Then even less where prayers would go out, not even knowing the people on the other end.

Monica will be back at work tomorrow, with a heavy heart for sure. My wife will be able to get an update then. Thank goodness there are still 2 siblings there to help look over her sister as they lost their parents when they were young. She still hasn't responded, and has continued pressure on the brain. They can't even operate on some of her other injuries yet, not until they know if she's coming out of this under her own power. Until then we'll wait, pray, hope that Monica has the strength to move forward, and of course hope for the best.

Again, thanks to you all, I'll make sure she knows we're all thinking of her. :props:

Awesome Mike!! Happy to see some pics. :D You actually drove your 335I to work?
