Hi everyone,

I detailed a black painted car last week.
Unfortunately i noticed holograms, i tried to use Brinkmann swirl finder but i can't see the holograms at all, it only shows up under the sun at certain angle.

I remember sending this car to a local car detailing center last year and it seems like the detailer are not well-trained to use a rotary, i could see zig-zag shape of swirls all over the car after that.

Tool used: Meg G220V2

First i clayed with Pinnacle Clay, and then:-
Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0 with white CCS pad, speed 5, 5 section pass
Wolfgang Paintwork Polish Enhance with black CCS pad, speed 4
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant with blue CCS pad, speed 3

- Anything wrong with my detailing steps?
- Did i cause the holograms? Or in fact i didn't polish the paint well enough and the holograms are actually caused by the previous detailer?
- Can Brinkmann swirl finder be used to inspect holograms?
- What do i need to do to remove these holograms?

Please let me know if you want me to provide more details.

Thank you.

you can most definately cause holograms by using a DA, but from what you said it sounds like it wasn't you. If you see zig-zag holograms they're probably from a rotary.. unless you didn't do 50% overlaps in opposite directions. And TWS on a white pad on a DA shouldn't cause holograms.. I only get DA haze with Surfbuff or on agressive pad/polish combos

I believed you caused them. Here is why:

1.TSR should be followed up with a finishing polish on a finishing pad - especially on black. PPE isn't a polish (no abrasives)

2. If the holograms were there prior, TSR with a white pad worked correctly 5 section passed would have removed them for sure. Holograms are pretty shallow, especially ones that can only be seen in certain light.

- follow up with WG FG.

go lower on the grit with the compound and work it a little faster.

if pad is loaded up clean it out. dont work it till its dry.Work wet more clean up no holograms. little spray of water last pass.71/2 foam pad for taking off sealer keep pad clean .speed 2 on buffer.and see where your at . then use your da if you like to top it off.clean pads and real litle touch.

Just for clarity... holograms aren't typically associated with DA machines. However, you may have left behind marring by using too aggressive of a product and not finishing down well enough.

On a different note... did you wash the car or do an IPA wipe down after polishing? I have found that some polishes are particularly difficult to completely remove and leave behind "smearing" that is nearly invisible except for at certain angles in the sun (ask me how I know :o). This can appear somewhat like a hologram, but is easily removed by washing the car after compounding/polishing to ensure you have a totally clean surface before applying your LSP.

That's what I was going to post... it's a "word" thing... :D

As swanicyouth pointed out, Wolfgang Paintwork Polish Enhancer was the wrong product to use after a Medium Cut Polish.

Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover = Medium Cut Polish
Wolfgang Finishing Glaze = Fine Cut Polish
Wolfgang Paintwork Polish Enhancer = Non abrasive pre-wax paint cleaner

Lots of confusion over this topic but the short version is, when it comes to the above products and a lot of similar products, it's an EITHER/OR situation.

You EITHER use the medium cut and fine cut polishes and then go to wax

OR you use the paint cleaner and then go to wax.

You don't use them all as it's redundant. The swirl remover and the finishing glaze are abrading/polishing the paint AND CLEANING it at the same time.

I know it can be confusing...

The "hologram" gone after i washed the car the next day, so you are right, they are just residue that left behind, how you know?

Thanks Mike!

I have one question, how do i determine if a product is "Medium Cut Polish" or "Fine Cut Polish"?

The reason i used the combination above was because i thought every paint correction steps are contain of "Compound > Polish > Seal"

Therefore i used:
Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover as compound
Wolfgang Paintwork Polish Enhancer as polish
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant as seal

I didn't know i have used the wrong product for my polishing step

Can anyone please correct me if any of the the steps below are wrong?

Option 1. Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover > Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant

Option 2. Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover > Opticoat 2.0

Option 3. M105 > M205 > Opticoat 2.0

Option 4. Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover > M205 > Opticoat 2.0

By the way, Meguairs M105 and Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover, M105 is more aggressive than TSR, am i right?

Or should i ask this question in another way, how do i know which compound is more aggressive than the other?

Thanks for all the replies, i love this forum as i can learn a lot from here.
