Home made grit guard for $5

Hey guys cleaning up the shop today, and had a old milk crate kicking around with a broken bottom. It was circular in shape and it got me thinking. the texture was perfect and it got me wondering if I could make a grit guard out of It.So I got my 5 gallon bucket flipped it over and matched up the milk crate bottom with it. It was perfect in a way that the bottom of the milk crate was slightly larger but the bucket had a chamfer to it so I knew it would give enough space off the bottom of the bucket and fit snugly! I had a pair of dikes and snipped the edges of the crate bottom and just slid it in, here's the finished product!View attachment 21133View attachment 21134View attachment 21135View attachment 21136View attachment 21137 I also got to thinking if you had a larger bucket all you would have to do is put some coated self tapping screws in, and you would be able to custom fit any bucket! What about the baffles that extend from the grit guard to the bottom of the bucket to prevent water movement?
 
I think I only paid $8 for my grit guards, no snipping required. But you get a star for recycling.
 
It was free for me but I took into the fact the bucket cost 5 bucks so all in all not bad, had fun with it and made something out of nothing, just thought id share, thanks all
 
Props to you! If you can do it out of something already laying around your garage, then you're saving money! I'm all for it.

Yup after all the labor and snipping id rather pay the extra 2 bucks and get a legit one

Andrew, I wouldn't stop there. See if you have long flat plastic pieces around that you can glue or epoxy to the grate to make baffles. Making it for free can't be beat.
 
Thanks for all the comments guys, it was just a fun simple project that took about 5 mins not to much labor at all, plus i just like making stuff! if I can save 10 bucks in 5 mins ill do it lol, ill see if I can add some simple baffles out of something thanks guys!
 
I think you could use some plexiglass or what ever the newer version of it is called.It would be pretty simple to cut with a jigsaw and cut a slit in the middleof each to slide into each other then epoxy or silicone adheisive.

GREAT IDEA BTW. NO IM LOOKING FOR MILK CRATES THAT WILL WORK :)
 
Genius! I'd totally do the same thing if I had the raw materials on-hand.
 
I have a dedicated bucket for my rinseless washes to avoid contamination with soap. Since it's square in shape, I wasn't about to cut up a new $10 grit guard to fit and looked for an alternative. They were doing some remodeling at work, tossing some old light fixtures. I scrounged one of the florescent light diffuser grids and with a little hacksaw work and some gluing, had a grit guard at zero expense.
