Hood has tons of 'chicken scratches'

This is a chicken scratch all right!

A question for the original poster; has the hood ever been repainted?

The reason I ask is your photo looks like a repaint and it was also laid down too thick. Believe it or not more paint isn't better if it becomes too thick.

Other reasons:

  • Improper surface preparation
  • Sub-straight contamination
  • Ratio of thinner to paint may be incorrect
  • Material not blended thoroughly
  • Wrong additives used
  • Surface temperature too cold for painting
  • Forced flash and drying times
Temperature effects everything. It causes materials to expand and contract at different rates. As an example, 1 inch of steel will expand 0.00000645 inches for every degree Fahrenheit increase in temperature. I don't know the figures for automotive paint but I'm certain they're different.

Excessively think topcoats magnify stresses and strains that can result in delamination of one coat from the other..
