I mean, on the face of it, how ridiculous is the line, when you are trying to leave, "what will it take to get you to buy a car today?" as if it's an impulse-buy candy bar on the way out of the supermarket.
I do think for some set of buyers it is often based upon emotion. so that line probably does work. They figure if the potential customer walks off the lot they are gone for good if they do not sense you saw something you liked. Many buy on credit so the real negotiating point is what is the monthly payment is and less about the total cost. I have seen some that just want the best price and do not care as much about color/options and others just the opposite that want THE car (color, interior).
I financed my last car through Ford Credit (almost no interest) and the business manager (the guy that makes a big deal about signing all the papers) kept asking about upsells for just xxx amount per month.
