hot water or steam

If I am to purchase a system for interior cleaning, will a hot water recovery do the job, or do I need steam? What are the pros and cons.

i originally bought just the hot water extractor but stubborn stains were a bit of a problem. so then came the steamer and it helps with the stains but is much slower and i use it for other stuff more, door jams, weatherstripping, emblems , door handles etc. if you want nice looking carpet a hot water is usually ok but for perfection steam is the key. imo also always look for low sudsing cleaners.

So I guess that, in the long run, both hot water and steam are more or less needed?

each one has it purpose its best to have both
