how aggressive of a swirl remover do I need?

I just tried removing some of the swirls in the hood of my 2003 Yukon, and didn't have a lot of luck. I used Mothers 3 step Ultimate Wax system, and I don't think the first step polish was quite strong enough. Would something like Meguiar's Scratch-X or Ultimate Compound be what I'm looking for? I'm just using a Carrand buffer that I picked up at Wally World. Thanks.
 
The products weren't the problem. Unfortunately it's your buffer. You will need something with more power and the right pads in order to do any correction work on your vehicle.
 
Well I don't think a legit buffer is in my budget right now. Is there any way doing it by hand might get better results? And what pads would you suggest?
 
Perhaps the HF polisher is in your budget?

Megs ultimate compound, mf app pad, and a loottt of elbow grease.. It could work
 
If you don't have the money for a buffer you can try doing it by hand with a Meguiars Hand Pad, some Lake Country Polishing pads, and some Meguiars Ultimate Compound. It will take a while, but it can be done.
 
Those HF polishers look pretty enticing, didn't know they were that inexpensive. If I can't talk the wife into it, might go the elbow grease route. Thanks for all the advice guys, really glad I found this forum.

Don't forget there are plenty of 20% off coupons around the internet for HF so you can get the buffer for $47.
 
Can you afford $90? I can get you the code to get Griots DA for $90. That's $50 off the price. I don't really like giving out word about this because AG loses money on this but in your case, if you can do this go for it. AG will bring the price down and price match it.

Or if you are in the L.A i'll lend a hand for free!
 
It may take a little time and effort...
But I don't see what it would hurt to use the machine you already have:

Just adhere to Mike Phillips' adage: "Least aggressive first".
Keep in mind:
There are other less-aggressive/abrasive Meguiar's products before you get to UC...Such as:
Ultimate Polish, ScratchX, M205, ColorX, D151
