How do dilute a product exactly?

Usually I will eyeball it. For example on rims I use zep citrus to brake up the dust. I will pour a bit of zep into just the bottom section, And fill the rest with water. Its highly diluted but its all I need for most of the cars I work on

To make it easy, most 32oz bottles are almost exactly 1,000 mls filled to the brim. Each ounce is about 30mls. So, I always think in the metric system. If I'm using a dispenser pump that dispenses 1oz/30ml per pump - I pump product right in the bottle and count the pumps: 4 pumps = 4oz = 120ml. Then, I fill the bottle to the top with water. That would be about a 1:8 to 1:9 ratio.

This is a strange little topic. I frequently see it discussed and it exemplifies the risks associated with 'a little knowledge'! As per previous posts, if you have x:y, then you have total of (x+y) parts. The number of people who swear that there are 'y' parts makes a person worry about intelligence levels. After all, we use the term '50:50' in every day language - it doesn't work by the alternative argument.

At the end of it, dilutions are almost never more than a guide. People like me simply pull them out of our hats, test if they are ok, and go with it. If it is a bit stronger or weaker, it is not going to do any harm to anyone!
