how do I choose a polisher?

I work only on my car.

If you're only working on your car than you can do everything with a Porter Cable 7424XP or a Griot's Garage DA Polisher.

I like the PC because it's well built it's too bad Porter Cable doesn't improve their well-built tool to be as powerful as the Griot's copy of it.

IF you want the most power and the very generous Griot's warranty, then get the Griot's version of the PC.

Also get a 5" backing plate so you can burn and turn 5.5" pads as they are the way to go with these types of tool.

Now if you want tons of power and the ability to work faster and maybe someday detail cars or boats for money, then get the Flex 3401.

Or get one now and down the road pick up the other.

:)

Can the GG6 use the 3" plate? I asked GG and they said no. I'm debating between the GG6 (for power) vs. the PC. The PC take 3" plates and is less expensive. Like the OP I'm doing my own car.

I have a similar unit to GG6 (European version called Liquid elements 3000, same as UK DAS6 Pro) and put the 3" BP on it with no problems.

But will let another member with GG6 clarify it for you.

So if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....it's probably a duck.

Yeah well... sounds like the old drag racing adage;
"There is no substitute for cubic inches." ;)

Not that I disagree (in principle) to your statement though. However, one simple thing will disallow the entire amperage rating of DA machines, and has been discussed almost to the point of ad nauseam RE Rupes vs. the rest... and that is *gear reduction* (and/or rotating mass as well as (even incremental) changes in distance from center IE "leverage"). ;)

Surely explains how a 6.6L - 215HP CAT engine in a medium duty truck can have a weight (chassis) rating of 28,000 pounds and pull 45,000 pounds all day long. Might take a year and a day to run the quarter mile, but rest assured (I know because I drove them for over a decade) it'll pull that load at 74+mph for years on end. :props:
