I detail as a side job (mobile) I get most of my business from word of mouth. I am looking for ways to expand and still be mobile. How do you guys approach customers at shows the gas station etc or bigger customers like dealerships?

Full time job, part time detailer, strictly mobile, and booked for several weeks in advance. Primarily through word of mouth or people finding me through google.

I don't do any dealer work or approach random people. The randoms that I deal with all find me through the website.

Keep at it and continue to build your skills and repuation. it'll come. But speaking from experience, having a full time job does kinda inhibit your growth. There is only so much you can do in 2 days per week (while maintaining whatever else you have going on in your life and maybe taking a breath to rest).

When I started I just started asking my friends if they wanted their vehicles cleaned and I gave them a super deal. Then friends of my friends saw their vehicles and were amazed. Then they called me.

You have to have a vision, something you see in advance and are accountable to. You may have to give super deals until you build up a client book.

What I did in the Spring is advertise (small newspaper) a free scotchgard with every detail. A $50 value. Or whatever you feel is a fair price. Scotchgard costs less than $10 and only takes minutes to apply. It is a good way to offer a discount without sacrificing your wage.

Drive your mobile vehicle around nicer neighborhoods and just tell people that you will clean their car for %25 off. Once you get a few people in the neighborhood you will hopefully have created some web traffic (assuming you have website- or Facebook) and should hopefully get some calls.

If you live in a big city you can offer to clean a taxi in exchange for putting brochures in his/her cab.

If you know people with a lot of friends and you think those people have money to spend on a luxury item such as a detail. Give them a great deal and hopefully it will generate business.

I Agree with what these guy's are saying. For me it's also a business
I own on the side. Seems like one detail leads to 2 more. I'm pretty active with my Facebook page. I have a website. I'm listed on the web at a couple of local sites. Also I have a big people network work church community etc. I don't need to find customer's they find me. Do a good job on every car and your business will grow maybe slowly but surely it will grow.
