How do you correct very soft paint? I'm working an a 2011 VW Jetta Sportwagen and the paint is so soft, it seems like no matter what I do can't get the paint to be scratch free. When I try to correct it, the paint looks worse.

What machine are you working with? I have no experience with very soft paint, but it seems to be better using a DA polisher.

I use my flex with a grey pad and nothing more than 106FA and 85RD. Smat polishes don't work on soft paint IMO.

Using a PC. 85RD even seems to scratch it :( With a black LC CCS pad

Try 3M UltraFina and the 3M blue pad ;)
This has worked for me several times with my 3401 on speed 2-3,you can try it with your PC with the same speeds.

Is it your pad/polish combo or your towel when you wipe off polish residue? I did an Evo VIII a few months ago that had crazy soft paint, after D300/mf cutting disc I finished with LC black/85RD and every time I wiped the polish I noticed marring. Switched towels from one brand to PS Ultra Edgeless with for no marring.

Great minds think alike.

I've had perfection ruined during wipe off with stoopid-soft finiahes.. Only thing I've found for wiping residue off silly-soft paint is a high quality, soft WW MF spritzed liberally with a high lubricity QD like FK425 or M34.

Not a lot to look forward to later if you get it just right... IME those types of finishes swirl again when you walk by them. My problem child got Opti Coat and my aggravation subsided greatly.

Given that I wipe in only one directions and the defects don't line up, I am doubting the towels, not ruling them out though.

I am going to use a paint coating when I am done, first I have to get done :)

Try a different pad. My black 2010 RAV4 has very soft paint. I'd polish to perfection, finish up with KAIO on a gray LC CCS pad, and in this one section I'd have swirls. I used a LC maroon hydro pad w/KAIO and problem solved.

Another thing to consider/try..... Make sure your polish is breaking down properly and lessen up on the pressure applied towards the end of the buffing cycle. As mentioned, a real good quality MF is also essential for wipe off.

Are you noticing scratches or marring?

Sonax paint cleaner works great on soft paint. One of the best kept secrets out there.

I've had alot of luck going straight to Menzerna 85rd via a black pad and removing 90% of the defects (swirls) on really soft clear

If you have alot of RIDS then you've got trouble on your hands. To get it "right" your going to have to spend multiple hours, doing multiple steps

Rewash/IPA the car and make sure all the oils are off the clear

I could meet you in GreenBay if you would like some UltraFina and a blue pad.

How cool is that! ^ :coolgleam:

On my 2010 jetta I use WG TSR with a HT Tangerine Pad followed by WGFG on a HT Crimson pad and it turns out like Glass! I tried 105/205 to start and it made a mess, even the WG polishes with th Ht Cyan/Tangerine Combo would not finish down right. I've heard that WG polishes are similar to the Menzerna (Menzerna makes them) but I don't know what is equal to what?

What a cool offer from IID! :dblthumb2:
