How do you fix rusted rotors

I just purchased a used Lexus RX350 and it has the nice wheels that show alot of the caliper and rotors. The rotors look brown and rusted. How do you fix this? Also how do you prevent it? I am not good at mechanical work so what do you guys think would be a fair price to fix this? Thanks for your input.
 
Do they always look rusted or only after you washed your wheels? All rotors turn brown after you spray water on them. It goes away after you drive the car.
 
Sounds like he is referring to the hub part of the rotor, not the pad contact area.
 
Paint the are that doesn't contact the rotor or buy coated rotors???

Aren't the hups covered up by the rims though? Besides he specifically stated that the rotors look brown and rusted.
 
Sometimes you can see the around edge on the outside, and where the hubs. Id paint it with black caliper paint. Just make sure you dont paint the part where the pads hit.
 
Ya, the hub, for the most part should be covered. The outsides on mine showed though, and were rusted and nasty. Get some black BBQ paint, paint paper and painters tape. Undo the caliper and pull the rotor and paint them. They will look way better. You can do it while it is on the car, but the rotor can get in the way, and you have to worry about overspray.
 
Thanks guys for the suggestions. It is mostly around the edges, looks rusty. Heres some pics.

Steel Rotors always rust. You can buy a Porsche with Ceramic Rotors. It's only an $8,000 option.
 
Just get a Dupi Color kit and paint that part black.
 
There is a company that makes Stainless Steel replacement rotors, so no more rusts. Don't remember the name. Do a search on the net....
 
That would be your two options. Paint what you have (make sure you prep them well first or the paint won't stick) or get another set. A lot of companies offer zinc or cadmium plating that will not rust, or check ebay for some that come painted on the hubs and the outer vent area (everywhere except the pad contact area). BTW, if you do paint them, make sure that it is a high temp paint.

Damn, I wish I could solve my problems using that rationale.... one day maybe:cheers:
