I have heard to use steel wool on oxidized metal.
I have searched AGO and have not found any steps to take on this...

1. How do you do this?

2. what kind of steel wool do you use?

3. What cleaning agent is recommended.

4. What polish is recommended?

:hungry: for knowledge here ;)

I use #0000 Steel wool on exhaust tips or any type of aluminum.I've used it with 105/205 .I don't think there is a how too do on using steel wool .The 0000 is the finest and #0 is the coarse. So depending on what you are trying to clean and what type of metal will determine what steel wool to use.I also was informed that steel wool comes in #1-2-3-4 by another member .

where can you get #0000 steel wool? and do you need to finish with a metal polisher with a Mother's powerball afterward?

You can get #0000 steel wool at Home Depot or Lowes. On my exhaust tips I finished it off with Collinite No. 850 Metal Wax by hand (didn't do the whole exhaust). I do use a Mother's Powerball on some of my wheels.

Has anyone used the pinnacle safety scrub instead of steel wool or would that not be strong enough to clean oxidation off of metal?

I use #00. I've used it on glass inside and outside on the '99 Honda Accord. I've also used it on the outside windows of my '08 Mazda 3s.

I use P21S Finish Restorer on my Exhaust tip and muffler on its own by applying it with a microfiber towel, and then buffing it off. It works great for me. I assume I could get even better results with steel wool #0000

you can even get #0000 steel wool at wal mart around the paint i think it was, or around the fiberglass and sandpaper, one of those 2. was cheap. i bought 2 big packs. i dont use any polish with the steel wool.

Sparkie,

You used 000, correct? I might use 00 on my mothers 2003 Ford Explorers exhaust this weekend to check it out.
Yes, just remember I sprayed an acid product (DG#831) on it first. Let it set for about 5 minutes, then soak up your steel wool with soap and water and go to town....
About any acid wheel cleaner will work....

you can find it in the paint section at Wallyworld also ... use with metal polish for best results. Makes exhaust tips look better than new.

Bumpers one the Ford, Dodge and Chev trucks, the 00 works well on.

thanks for information guys I am going to give it a try on a set of chrome wheels that are really caked with tar and oxidation. I will try and upload some pictures when I have a minute.

ya i have heard that the german dealerships used 0000 to clean glass. i have used it with a nice foaming glass cleaner and scrubbed lightly to take off stubborn window chalk like the whole "go team go" bit that soccer moms have on their cars.

That happened once and I told the wife please dont do that again. It took forever to get it off the windows.
