How "Least Aggressive" Do You Get When Doing A Test Spot?

Is it bad to just start with the agreessive compound and aggressive pad? For instance, if I'm using mothers 08612 with an orange pad, then follow it with 08712 and a white pad, and finish with their synwax on a blue pad. Shouldn't that guarantee me results from my test spot or is the idea that you don't want to do more work than you have to?
