I have been looking at the different pads. LC flat pads has 5 different colors. LC CSS has 3 different colors.Meguiar's has 3 different colors. I've been searching the forums and it has a lot of information, but I'm still not sure. Does a person need all the different colors? I'm only doing my personal and family cars. Would the 5.5" pads in Orange, White, and Black be enough to wax, polish, and correct for now? I'm using a PC 7424.

No, you don't need all the colors. You'll usually need cutting pads, polishing pads, and finishing pads - and yes, a lot of people go for orange, white and black. Another option would be to go with MF pads for cutting, then foam for polishing and finishing.

I went for the LC hydrotech "series" of pads.
Only 3 colours/varieties which cover all your needs.
Cutting, polishing & finishing/wax, etc

Well do you compound? You may need a yellow pad
No you do swirl removal? You may need an orange pad
Do you like a nice finish you may need a white pad.
Do you need to finish or jewel. You may need a blue pad
Do you put on wax? You may need a black or as they call it grey pad.
So if you do all above you may need as many as 5 colors. If you do less you will need less pads.

I agree with MF and foam! A tangerine or white should do the finishing just fine IME.

Im still new to this about 5 cars under my belt I use the K.I.S.S. plan I run Megs yellow and black and have the MF kit to.

I also simplify things. I only use one pad size for my pcxp and that's the 4in. Great correction capability due to the pad size. I only use optimum cutting mf pads and lc ht crimson pads for finishing. For heavy scratches, i have 2 4in surbuf pads stanby. Compounds m105 and d300. Polishing/finishing m205, men 106fa and sonax ntpc. For now, that's all i need. Detailing japanese, italian and german cars.
