How much hand pressure? PC 7424xp

When I use my PC7424xp with the 6.5inch pads it seems that the weight of the machine alone will stop the pad from rotating. And when I watch videos with Mike it looks like he is applying some downward pressure.

Is it solely that I should be using 4" pads with this machine? Or should I be turning the machine up to 6?

I will say, the way I've been doing it, with no hand pressure, has corrected my lightly scratched vehicles quite well (using CCS White and M205). But the other day I had to do my new car with some curves and it was impossible to keep the pad rotating! How to buff out concave and convex curved panels by machine - YouTube suggests I could use some new pads, but in watching the video it looks like Mike is applying some significant hand pressure too.

I'm surely not the forum expert, but read a lot here, and do own a PC XP machine myself.

Before I even bought mine, I researched this forum, and the general concensus from other owers was this machine works optimally with a 5" Backing Plate, and 5.5" Pads.

Mike Phillips often will say he'll use 15 lbs or so of down pressure, and when you see him use this machine in such a manner, you do see the Plate go round and round.

For correction, there are only two speeds to use on this machine, #5, or #6.
#3 or #4 is fine for applying waxes, rotation isn't much needed for such.

On curves, it does become critical that the machine's pad be held parallel to the paint finish. Any canting will hinder rotation.

The same thing happens to me when I use mine. I posted this same question a while back and Mike and a few others responded. I haven't been out to try it yet due to the weather in Ohio. Light to no pressure the pad spins. When I apply a little bit of pressure it doesn't rotate well or consistent

I swear I did a search, and am somewhat embarrassed to read that very excellent article that describes exactly what is happening to me. The 7424XP that I own does great getting the 6 5/8" (i just measured!) CCS pads moving over flat surfaces, but throw any curve and it just bogs down requiring almost negative hand pressure. And this is with virtually brand new pads with plenty of product on the pads.

I am going to look into a smaller 5" or maybe even 4" backing plate and pads.

Thanks!

When I ordered my PC here on AG (my very first order), I also ordered both the Lake County 5", and the 3.5" Yellow Urethane Backing Plates, and a 5 pack of fiber Backing Plate Washers.

You most likely find for curves, and as well as tighter areas, the 4" Pad with the 3.5" Backing Plate will be the ticket.

First time I used my PC, I had used the 3.5" and 4" LC Hydro Tech Pads on my Kia, as the 5" Plate had bad threads. (I got another 5" Plate ASAP from the Geek Folks)

Even though the 4" HT Pads I got are 1.25" thick, they worked fine. 7/8" Thick Pads are probably even better yet.

I did the entire vehicle via 4" Pads, and was no problem, it's a relatively small car.

It only takes a minute to change Plates. This option gives better versatility to the machine.

Lots of wise folks here, with lots of experience under their belts. I was also wise to heed their advice, and suggestions. Mark
