I read somewhere on the forum that factory paint is approximately 160 mil and paint correction may remove approximately 8 mil of paint. How much paint is removed during wet sanding?

It depends on how aggressive you go with your wet sanding technique, what grits you use, if you are working by hand or machine, etc.

There really can't be a general rule of thumb for "how much paint will be removed when sanding" because in reality you should only be sanding deep enough to just barely remove the defects you are chasing. I can see easily removing 7-10 microns if chasing a deep scratch and then polishing out sanding marks. I wouldn't want to go any further than that unless it was a custom paint job with multiple layers of CC.

I agree you can sand plenty using 1000 as much as 2000. It all depends...

Technique plays a hard factor when wet sanding. Plus then there is compound and polish etc...

Factory paint is around 5-6 mil and the clear is probably less than half of that... I'm very cautious sanding on oem paint. On jobs I spray and not having a paint thickness gauge... with 3 coats of clear shot wet, I sand until the peel is removed and feel very confident I won't cut through as long as I protect the sharp edges.

You probably mean microns and not mils. Even at 160 mic., that's a healthy reading. Wet sanding can vary greatly and that is why a paint gauge is a must. Especially if you don't know the history of the car (paint).

factory paint isn't what it used to be unfortunately. I've been seeing readings range from 65 to 160 microns on the same car. the new teslas seem to have a wide variance in paint thickness from panel to panel... which is odd because the entire paint process is robotized.

No one can really tell you how much CC or paint is being removed while sanding , IMO it's all about how much you know about sanding , how much pressure is being use and hand speed if doing it by hand.
Too many variables.
