how often does everyone go to the dentist?

Go at least 1-2 times a year. Dental infections are nothing to take lightly. A family member got a dental infection that spread to other parts of his body and required extensive surgery to his shoulder to remove the infection! 2+ years later he is still feeling the effects.

I forgot to add that if you go every 6 months its a breeze. I used to hate to get my teeth cleaned but I realized that i waited so long that it made the process miserable.

I used to go when I was younger every 6mo but wasn't too thrilled with him but had no choice as I was a kid at the time. Once I became a young adult I didn't go to the dentist for quite some time. When we moved back north my wife really suggested I visit her dentist that she had used since she was a little girl. So I made an appointment and went. I ended up having 3 cavities that needed to be addressed. This new dentist is really good and makes going a lot less stressful. Great work and very detailed and gentle. So now I am back to going every 6 months.

Like Mike Phillips says- Frequent proper care is much easier than neglect and trying to fix the long term damage.

it's good you went, better late than never. at least you got the cavities (filled/cleaned) and taken care of, where as if you kept neglecting it it could lead to worse problems and possibly even losing the teeth. from my understanding, i hear root canals and extractions aren't very fun to deal with. it seems we (not everyone, just sayin') spend more time and money on our cars but neglect our health and that's the most important thing of all. everything else is secondary...

Speaking of health, I don't think I saw a doctor for 25+ years when I was younger.

Now, I've seen about 4-5 different kinds of doctors in last 18 months. Lol

I see my dentist, ophthalmologist and physician every 6 months. The eye doctor because I have glaucoma and the regular doc due to Type 2 diabetes. I keep both issues under control. The dentist is a great guy and has never hurt me in my 22 years going to him. We talk cars and politics; we'll he talks and I listen until it's time to rinse and spit.

I go twice a year now, but there was about a 10 year stretch that I didn't go at all. The dentist was amazed at how good the condition of my teeth and gums was. Proper brushing and flossing is as (if not more) important than regular visits to the dentist IMO. To relate it to detailing (like several have done), going to the dentist is like taking your car to a professional detailer. If you don't properly care for your teeth/car between visits, the benefits of having it done aren't as great.

This is an interesting thread that has nothing to do with detailing. Unfortunately, I was genetically blessed with terrible teeth.... Just a bunch of root canals and got the two front ones knocked out before I was 20...

But, you wouldn't know it. I think I have ~ $30k in implants, caps, crowns, etc..in the past few years. I go twice a year - because I always need some work done. It's a never ending process only limited by dollars - kinda like "How fast you wanna go? - Well, how much money you got?"

If you've have a bad dental experience - the key is to find a good dentist you like. My dentist is awesome, but expensive. Stay away from those 50 Dr. dental chains if you can afford it, and never get a visible tooth pulled of you can avoid it. Find a good local dental practice with 2 or 3 doctors...If your dentist sends you to another "specialist" dentist to do every little procedure - bail. A skilled and experienced dentist should be able to handle almost everything in house - like a skilled detailer. Can you imagine if a detailer told you he doesn't do coatings or clean wheels???

Good dentists are worth the $$$ fo sho - it's like a good detailer in more ways than one - you get what you pay for.

Going to the dentist is like a mechanic they make your car sound like it needs everything.I have 3 cavities for years now .I just don't want to make the time for the dreaded dentist apt till it bothers me.Last year tooth cracked to care of that within a week.Like to do twice a year but really hate the dentist.

I visit a dentist once a year as a company requirement but I go to my dentist every quarter for cleaning and check ups. I hated going to the dentist due to some bad experiences and I am the one that paid the price. I did perform a couple of self extractions that the dentist said I did a good job. After the second one my wife said I had to start going to the dentist so it doesn't bother me now to go.

Funny enough, I was just brushing my teeth and while moving my electric toothbrush along the prescribed pattern I had the odd thought that I am actually not brushing, but rather machine polishing with an aggressive compound. I follow up with an aggressive Listerine rinse and a good floss. Am I detailing my teeth??? Wow.

I have gone to the same dentist since I was 9 years old twice a year. I'm 38 now and have no fillings so I trust the guy for sure and, after 29 years, I get the coveted Saturday morning appointment. (He only opens his practice one Saturday a month). Another odd thing about that office - they have 7 patients in their 90's that have their original teeth.

Rereading this, I am a little obsessed with dental health. Sorry not sorry?

that's the whole point is trying to keep your original teeth whether you have to have fillings or not (though it's likely to happen at some point in time in life). your blood stream from infected teeth is what is concern because it can go to different parts of the body (heart which is never good) and cause health serious problems. i'm seeing a chiropractor and you would be surprised on how your bone alignment can affect your back, shoulders, neck, posture, etc. if not treated it gets worse and more potential problems (pain sucks!) can present themselves in the future as well. you only have one body and if you don't take care of it who will? right?

I write code for a living for an auto manufacturer and I come home a train like a competitive powerlifter. Believe me, I know all about body maintenance and have a chiropractor and massage therapist I visit frequently. The body is a system of systems. Speaking specifically about the musculoskeletal system the muscles, bones, fascia, tendons and ligaments are in constant, precarious balance. When something gets out of alignment (a shifted bone, a tense muscle, etc) the pain can present in a completely different part of the body. Anyway, maintainance isn't just for cars.
