This is a great subject! I travel for business a lot and tried out a very simple rule for a week to see if it had an effect: I lowered my highway speed to 60 Mph and got a 20% increase in gas mileage. That's a lot of savings (approx. $0.60 per gallon if you want to look at it that way).

I even wrote to my legislatures and suggested all government vehicles (excluding public safety and ambulance) adhere to this rule...no response. Yet, they think that alternative fuels, etc are the answer.

Try out the "Drop 10 - Get 20" rule for a week and see if it works for you. Word of caution: some folks will climb on your bumper when you do this..

GOOD TIP.....SLOW DOWN SAVE GAS.......
Slow downs does maybe save a little gas, but let's not recommend it. All hybrid little Toyotas already drive slow (about 45 MPH in a carpool lane).
I personally think that when buying a little hybrid, they should give you a case of Monster energy drinks, so you won't drive below the speed limit.

I didnt read through everything, but here are some things I bet no one said.

1. Reduce the weight of your car
2. Dont put on huge rims
3. Only fill up half a tank. Each gallon of gas weighs 6-8lbs.

For those that are more interested in general car maintenance, check out the forums at BobIsTheOilGuy.com .

I don't really have any other tips other than what's already been mentioned, but I think driving smarter (lay off the gas pedal, coast to a stop light, etc.) along with a well tuned car are about the best things you can do.

Good thread!

My car has weird ratios, when i'm in 5th gear going 65 MPH i'm just about 3000 RPMs or over lol.

I don't know why people get so pissed when ur already 10 MPH over the limit and they wanna go faster. This is in a city street with a limit of 45 i was already going 55 and the dude was driving as if he's gonna hit my rear bumper :p

In my Cummins, I make sure I check the below for good mpg:

1) Tires correctly inflated
2) Clean fuel filter / air filter
3) Keep the rpms under 2,000 (which is about 68 mph)
4) Estimate traffic ahead so you don't have to slam on your breaks and then speed up again
5) Get in highest gear as soon as possible (and stay in it as long as possible)

And most important of all: keep it clean! All that dirt on the paint increases drag on your vehicle!!!
You said it!:applause:

I've noticed that on average I get about 20 MPG. Well, it varies from 19-21 (per book it's 18 city, 26 highway, but I usually never even get that).

I gotta fill up after leaving the office...think gas is 3.06 for regular here right now........love my V8 suv lol

I wish I would be 3.06 here...Last week I paid $3.70 for premium.

An article on increasing gas mileage was e-mailed to me. Google: Acetone added to fuel.

Wow acetone. I think that's also used to remove nail polish :p

the acetone works 4 oz per 10 gals gave me about +1-2 mpg.......

oh and my truck in city driving 8-10 mpg about 14-15 highway .....these are on good days :(

I get 24 average and I have a SMALL SEDAN, I mean small enough that the back can have no leg room...a Civic coupe my year I'm sure would beat me in MPG.

ouch my dads contour ive been driving around get around 28 im lovin that thing now that gas prices are over 3 bucks here :D

lucky :D

Finally filled up today....was about 3.40 for regular....then proceeded to floor it when I left the station to hear that lovely V8 noise:D....guys with economy cars at the station filling up mutsa thought I was crazy and pry just wasted 1-2 gallons lol. For a V8 suv though its pretty good on gas.

Think this is the highest prices have been? In 10 years of driving I don't ever recall paying that much....though I do remember when I was 16 and got my first truck and didn't care b/c gas was like $1 lol.

premium is $3.99 at the local station, and acetone is probably not very good for your engine.

From what I've heard as long as you don't use to much there's nothing
to worry about.

If it affected anything it would be the fuel system parts since they're
mostly rubber and plastic.

And from my experience, controlling your right foot has alot to do with
gas mileage...haha
