How to prime a foam pad when using a DA Polisher

I'm still not sure about when to prime pads. I guess it depends on the compound/polish you work right? For instance, I tried to use Menzerna 3800 and priming the pad worked better than just using 3 or 4 dots. But working with HD Speed is the opposite, with 4 dots I get better results.
 
I never prime foam pads. I just start with a circle and three dots thereafter.
