Do you have a Rupes 21ES polisher and you want to switch out your factory 6" BP to the 5" BP? Or do you have a Rupes 15ES and just want to replace the BP? But wait there's a problem... How in the world do you get that tight-a$$ factory bolt out?!?! Not unless you have big guns like Mark, this bolt is so hard to remove!!!

I thought I was extremely weak for not being able to remove it myself but someone PM'ed me who experienced the same problem. So there might be more people experiencing this. Therefore I decided I would like to share how I removed that tight factory installed bolt holding the backing plate.

The leverage from the allen key provided by Rupes wasn't enough. So I used this set of pliers:

I just clamped on the allen key sitting horizontally increasing the leverage on the allen key. Just twist it and viola!!! It will come off.

Here are other types of pliers you can use:

Hope this helps!!!

thought mine was defective, cause the screw was so hard to get loose!!!!!

Mine was welded on, at least it felt that way.

I had to take mine to a friends motor shop, and even he had a hell of a time getting the bolt loose.

The first question that comes to mind is why this bolt is installed so tightly at the factory? :dunno:

This thread has made me feel so much better. I ended up using the closed end of a wrench for more leverage. That bolt is excessively tight from the manufacturer.

Did anyone notice a thread lock compound on the bolt once it was removed?

I had to channel the power of Thor to get mine out. Ended up slicing my palm.

Funny I made a thread about the exact same problem one minute before you did LOL!

Hey Mike I should have asked you to sign my Rupes 15 when you repaired it for me! That would have made my day!

Mine must have been a refurbished our something, came right off with the supplied key?

I found my Rupes to be tight but not excessively so. Maybe Bruno with forearms like railroad ties, was assigned to tightening backing plates before shipping that week.

Odd, I just remember it took ALOT of effort and now I have a 5inch BP on my Rupes.

Using the vise grip on the allen key made it super easy to remove. But just the Allen key I was sure I was gonna break something with all the efforts I was putting in ;)
