I am wanting to get my husband polisher/waxer for Christmas. I have seen that most people say to get the Porter cable 7424xp. Could anyone help me with what products to order with it for him? Thanks for all you help in advance! I know nothing about them :)

If it isn't too late, pick the Griots Garage 6 inch dual action polisher instead of the Porter Cable 7242XP.

I would also get him the Meguiars Microfiber Pad system. 2-4 pads of cutting and 2-4 pads for finishing. Then you can get the coordinating compounds and finishing wax.

If you call the staff at Autogeek, they will be really helpful with putting a package together for your husband.

I would call AutoGeek and ask for Nick or Megan. The can actually build you a package that will fit you husbands individual need. Feed them his info of intended use and needs and they will take care of you.

Thanks! That is helpful. I will have to call them. The Griots Garage 6 inch dual action polisher would be better? I am not really sure what he is wanting to achieve. He just keeps making comments about the swirls on his black truck and how it needs to get waxed.

Ahhh, well it sounds like unless he intends to get on this forum for advice the Mike Phillips detailing book in the store would be helpful to him as well.

Hi porter0810,

This is so nice that you're taking the time to register with our forum just to ask questions and get help picking out just the right products for your husband.

I just sent my Dad a brand new Porter Cable 7424XP plus a collection of 5.5" Lake Country Flat Pads and some Pinnacle Polishes to polish out his daily drivers plus his toy...

There are a number of DA Polishers on the market, the original design is from Porter Cable and everyone else's is a knock-off of their design.

All the DA Polishers we care will work great, some people like the Griot's Garage because it does offer the most power to keep the pad rotating when applying pressure to the tool to remove swirls.

I show all of them in the garage when we have our Thursday night projects because they will all get the job done...

So all the major players in the DA Polisher world will work but it is true that the Griot's Garage does have the most power to maintain pad rotation under pressure and it's when the pad is rotating that swirls and scratches are removed.

When you get bored and want to learn more about these types of tools then check out my article below, after reading it you should know everything you need to know about these tools, why they work and why they are SAFE.

The Free Floating Spindle Assembly - The Story Behind The Story...

In the above article and on page 49 of my new how-to book you'll see a picture of my son Rand using the Megs version to buff on a black Batmobile recreation owned by my friend Nate Trueman.

Get 5.5" flat pads, I sent my Dad the Lake Country Flat version because they are the simplest form of buffing pad and will work on just about anything. Later he can experiment with all kinds of fun stuff like,

CCS Pads
Hydro-Tech Pads
Surbuf Pads
Kompressor Pads
Optimum Microfiber Pads
Meguiar's Microfiber Pads

Ahhh, well it sounds like unless he intends to get on this forum for advice the Mike Phillips detailing book in the store would be helpful to him as well.

Thanks for the plug Corey, it's much appreciated...

Here's the book he's talking about, it covers everything he wants to do...

Paperback

And welcome to our fun and friendly discussion forum!

Get the book along with whatever else you decide. It's full of information, and it's reasonably priced, even cheap for what's in it.

After reading your thread title I thought:
What a thoughtful person you are!

My wife is the same way. Or, rather, She was until I kept making comments and asked for some: "assistance" with caring-for-leather.

Many excellent ideas have already been suggested...
Merry Christmas to you and your husband.

Your husband will love you more if you spring for the Griots 6" DA. Its only a few dollars more, has a lot more power then the Porter Cable and also has a Lifetime (no questions asked) Warranty whereas Porter Cable only has the one year warranty

Not to mention all the Porter Cables that've been flying apart during polishing (which can be extemally dangerous)

The choice is obviously yours...

Removing the swirls out of a black truck is completely doable... in my how-to book I do recommend breaking large vehicles up into sections and then just tackling a section a day, or a section a weekend so that way you keep the project fun.

Here's the deal with the different options for the polishers...

As long as you get thin, 5.5" foam pads, all three of the different polishers will get the job done, that includes,

Porter Cable 7424XP

Griot's Garage 6" Random Orbital Polisher

Meguiar's G110v2

If you go with the Griot's Garage Polisher it comes with a 6" backing plate but you'll need a 5" backing plate to use with 5.5" pads. Here's the link to a 5" backing plate,

LC-43-125DA Dual Action 5 Inch Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate

If you go with the Porter Cable you'll still need the backing plate as the tool doesn't come with a dedicated backing plate, just a single foam pad that's "glued" to a plastic baking plate that can't be used with other pads.

I'm the Spokesperson for Pinnacle Products so of course I'm going to recommend Pinnacle Products for this project but the good news is they work great!

Medium Cut Polish
Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover

Fine Cut Polish

Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish

Wax
Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax

Here's a recent car we buffed out using Pinnacle Polishes and then topping with Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax...

The following Sunday, the owner Tommy entered his car into a car show and won,

  1. Best of show
  2. Best Camaro
  3. Best paint

Not bad...

I'm sure others will chime in with their tool, pad and product suggestions...

:)

Not to mention all the Porter Cables that have been flying apart during polishing (which can be externally dangerous)

The GG does have more power but the Porter Cable has the longest history of being a reliable tool.

I've been using them since they were introduced from the wood sanding industry to the paint polishing industry and I've NEVER had one fly apart while I'm using it. And this is one of the reasons I sent my Dad a PC...

Any example of ANY tool in the world flying apart is more of the exception, not the rule.

Just to try to keep things in perspective...

:)

:iagree:get the book in paperback form. Its great to reference.

If you get the Griots, you won't need the additional backing plate

I will help you put together a custom kit that will provide everything he will need at a cost concience effort if you'd like?

Here's an article that shows pictures of 5" and 6" backing plates and the safety margin...

5" and 6" Backing Plates on 6.5" pads (Pictures to show safety margin)

Here's 5" backing plates on 5.5" pads to show how they fit. Shown are the Meguiar's W67DA and the Edge DA 500 on 5.5" Hydro-Tech pads and 5.5" CCS pads

5.5" Hydro-Tech pads

5.5" CCS pads

Note how the backing plate sticks out past the edge of the pad. If you're careful you could use this set-up but an easier and wiser thing to do is to use a backing plate that's a little smaller than the back of the pads you use.
