I’m about to do something crazy…

Engine is in the back behind the seats on the European model's
Can't say for sure on the US version

It looks like there’s an engine in the rear based on what looks like muffler vents above the rear bumper, but I could’ve sworn I saw somekind of reservoir along with other engine compartment looking things during the brief moments I had it open. Keep in mind I was trying to close it from the moment it came open because it felt like a jigsaw puzzle was about to come loose and I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to put it back together. Lol.

The hood is locked in by 2 Plastic clips that pull out on each side of the plastic grill, then once those are loose there’s a nylon strap that’s attached inside underneath the hood and latched onto the inside under the hood. I’m guessing you somehow unhook that strap and the entire hood comes off, but I didn’t want any part of messing that up so I decided to stop before unhooking the strap. Too funky & fragile for my taste. Lol.

There’s also 2 extra oversized rubber cupholders besides the ones in the center console area that I can’t figure out where they’re supposed to go. Maybe I’ll Google that. Interesting little vehicle to say the least.

1 last quirk: The seatbelt chime. When I 1st backed this car into the drive way I thought the car was going to self destruct based on what sounded like an airplane cockpit alarm sounding off a serious sounding warning chime. I thought maybe the parking brake was on but it wasn’t. For almost 2min. i was sitting there afraid to move the car because that alarm sounded like it was such a big deal that I didn’t want to be responsible for accidently destroying any vital components of this car… That loud alarm turned out to be the seatbelt chime. lol.
I guess it’s such a big deal in this car because they know it’s pretty much certain death if you were to get into a fender bender while driving this little toy car on the streets.

Yeah engine is rear mounted due to safety, they are built so the hood/bonnet can be interchangeable i think, on some other models you can do the doors also.

I have seen one on YT with a motorcycle engine in the back going nuts!
More of a city car hence way they are popular with country's that have narrow roads and tight parking spots.

Speaking of safety, if you ever have a teenage son or daughter and you’re looking to preserve their innocence, send em off to a date in that thing… They’ll never have room to do anything but go to and from where they said they were going. For damn sure no room for any funny business in that car!lol.

That's some funny sh$$!

As mentioned, the engine on these things sits under the floor at the back.

Compared to what others were doing at the time, this was a very different approach to building a small/affordable car.

Eldorado2K, I have a friend who HAD a Smart Car. He was rearended and when the paramedics arrived at the scene based on the damage, they thought his head was internally decapitated. After much care getting him to the hospital and being X rayed, they found his spine was intact. Needless to say, after that he didn't buy another Smart Car.
