Of how much dust m105 makes as well as how hard it is to use. Although I do like how well it cuts especially on my hard BMW e39 paint.
It seems like every time I use it, I have to learn to use it all over again.
Even mixing 2:1 with ultimate compound, still dusts a ton and is very hard to remove.
My LC orange pads weren't doing much one the neglected dark blue paint so I ordered a couple of yellow cutting pads and why not, a couple of Surbuf pads. Surbuf pads sucked, the micro fingers were shedding everywhere so I discontinued using them(anyone wanna trade?).
In the end i achieved about 95% correction and made up for the rest with PB Black Hole. Sealed it with BFWD which gave me a super slick finish but not much shine
I let that cure 24hrs and added a coat of 50/50 and am planning on adding V7 tomorrow. Overkill?
It's been overcast here, actually had a layer of snow on my car this morning, which may explain the lack of shine?
I'll post pics tomorrow to get ur opinions.
Sorry for the long rant.

You really have to perfect your technique to use M105 or get will end up with headaches with dusting, gumming up, etc.

I have moved on to FG400 and couldn't be happier...

Try some Johnson's baby oil on the pad and that should reduce the dusting a bit.

I've been using 105 for years now, yes it's dusty, I wash after using it or any compound.
I use as little as possible and always have great results.
So either perfect your technique or switch product.
And your Micro finger pad will shed, just less and less over time. I beat the snot out of mine when there new.

Why aren't you using a rotary on that paint system?

I second that. I love fg400.

Should also give HD Uno or HD Cut a try. Both are great products and don't dust nearly as much as 105.

That being said there is always a place for 105 in my arsenal. It's definitely meant to be used on a rotory, but with proper technique you can get great results with minimal dusting on a DA as well.

Personally, I find Meguiar's M105 much easier to use on a rotary then a dual action polisher. For some reason many dual users tend to over saturate or over use a product and excess product will dry and dust. In this case less is more....:props:

just switch to m101!...it will put a big ol smile on your face :)

HD Cut is a really good choice, very little dust and cuts nearly as well as 105.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will definetly try FG400 next, i still have to finish my wife's new(to us) car and I'm very much not looking forward to it. I spent(dont laugh) 6hrs on the passenger side and hood using m105 and an orange pad. Hopefully it goes by faster with FG400 and the yellow or MF pads even if i have to do a second step to finish nice.

My Makita rotary just gets used to spin my pads dry. I just cant seem to control it well and it splatters everywhere, etc. I bought a nice soft 5" backing plate for it and have tried wool and foam pads and i just cant seem to get the hang of it. I'd rather spend a little extra time on the DA to get results.
***Side note-i was too lazy to plug in the Makita to dry my pads so i spun them on the PCXP and the BP threads got damaged and can no loger use it. Good thing it was just the BP that was damaged and not the DA, plus i had a back-up one sitting around.

Congrats on the X5. Run the FG400 on the orange foam pad first and see where that gets you. Keep us updated on your findings with FG400.

Should have used the rotary to dry the pads. Lesson learned.

M100 dust less and has a much longer working time than 105. I feel like it cuts just a hair less but I like it. I'm making the switch from 105 to 101 soon, though. I'll keep 100 around because it's cheap and works well on a lot of jobs.

Have you tried using M-100. Its more da friendly than M-105. Longer working time and dust way less.

Reviving and old thread here.
I just wanted to take back my first statement that m105 dusts like crazy.
Although it pretty much sucks on a DA, now that I've been using my rotary, I gave it a shot again. I was surprised to see NO dusting and wiped off super easy. Just had to use the right tool/product/pad combo.
I did buy the FG400 and I'll tell you, you can work that FOREVER. It does a very nice job too, but if I need to cut deeper I still go to m105.

I wonder if dusting may be more of a factor of temperature of your environment than rotary vs DA. I do not know why pure rotation would be any different than rotation + side to side motion. With my GG DA I have never noticed it heating up the pad or the car surface. I have noticed that M105 dusts much more if the temperature is above 80 degrees.
