I ask the people...is this offensive?

Desertmate, the story about the tourist is probably where another term comes from, its called "Ugly American" or to stay on point here, "Ugly Murican". Not sure how someone could be so arrogant like that, kinda like when someone tells the world how much money is their wallet and/or account......hmmm!

The sad part was, it was pervasive almost everywhere you went. I think the tie back to the topic at hand I failed top provide, is the fact that same narrow minded menality is exhibited everywhere. It just stands out moreso in a foreign environment.

Really don't see it as offensive. It's like an abbreviation or nickname. People need to relax and enjoy themselves instead of getting so wrapped up in something so trivial.

It someone is offended by that, I feel sorry for them. Who has time to care about such nonsense?

I dont find any personal offense to it but I do find it highly disrespected to our country and the hard working people in it.

Look at our massive entitlement programs and income re-distribution. A lot of the country ain't workin' so hard anymore.

+1 It also dumbs us down.

The pride of the country is in bad enough shape with out not being proud enough to spell it correctly. Espically with AMERICAN MUSCEL CARS, Yes they were produced in other countries, however the idea and the designs came from AMERICAN auto companies that owned plants across the pond and down under.

As to the photo shopped pics above,,, YEA Im reall happy to have overweight and unintelligent looking people representing us on the web, <Jeeze!>:nomore:

The worst part about those comparisons is that they take the worst of one and best of another.

Take the Japan vs. America thing. Jennifer Anniston is 44 (I had to look it up).

I'm not a fan of ethnocentrism on any front. I think it's quite silly.

That said, if I had looked at this magazine cover, I don't think 'offensive' would've crossed my mind. In fact, I've used that term myself. It's colloquial for that southern-style, bigger than it needs to be, more-power-is-more-better Americana.

I agree with you Roman, sure Jennifer Aniston is good response to the pic I found, no doubt about it and there's thousands of women you could put in that for that matter, ones you don't know but in general, we're fat as a country. I for one am trying every day to do something about my weight, I'm short and stocky and have bad genes, so its harder for me but I'm not over-weight at all and proud of it, but I'm also no "Tony Atlas" either. My buddy Derek and I made a pact a long time ago when we were alot younger and went to carshows and cruize nights and you'd see these guys sitting in their lawn chairs infront of their Murican muscle cars with HUGE boilers, we both said that when we're that age that isn't going to be us and so far, we've held up the deal, although either of us have a toy car anymore either, LOL!

I'm glad for the input from everyone!

It's not offensive and if it said AMERICA, the cover just wouldn't make sense.

Perhaps major publications shouldn't be putting slang on their covers, but I don't think less of Motor Trend for doing it.

Haha

Well believe it or not, as a country, we are making strides in the right direction. In fact, we are no longer the most obese nation in the world!

It's definitely an issue. And IMHO, it's not because we're fat. The issue is why we're fat. We don't slow down and take the time for anything. We live in the now. Not only are we not going to have a healthy balanced dinner sitting down with our families (and instead are going to go to some restaraunt or drive-thru), but we are going to choose fatty, good-tasting food because it's good "right now", not concerned about how it will affect us "in the future". And trust me! I know allll about that. Last July I was 330lbs. As of this morning I'm 251. Fact is, I was busy (still am) and made TONS of excuses (Americans love excuses and to pass blame). The reality though? It's all my fault- nobody elses, and I have plenty of time to eat healthy. Everyone does. "I only get a 20 minute lunch". So? Sometimes I don't get one at all. If I go out, there are healthy choices everywhere (Protip: Look at the nutritional info. A McDonalds cheeseburger is lower calorie than a lot of their chicken wraps; though there's more nutrition in the wraps. Also, Salads aren't always a good choice. They often lack in nutrition and have so much junk on them, like dressings or even fried chicken, that they are a very poor choice). Otherwise, I prepare my lunches at home beforehand. Today I had some fruit to satisfy my sweet tooth, a piece of smoked salmon and a salad made with spinach, some fresh peppers and a light vinegar dressing used sparingly. Took just a few minutes to prepare this morning.

Anyway, point is, every nation- every people- every creed has issues. Our biggest one, IMO, is the live-in-the-now culture that is catching up with us. We can do it though! No excuses. We're also an excuse culture. Especially when it comes to weight loss. All kinds of magazine articles on fad diets and stuff. And my favorite "Diets don't work". Yes they do. It's basic science. Calories; carbs, proteins, sugars- your body uses them for energy. If your body takes in more energy than it uses, it stores the rest. So take in less, and it'll use up it's storage. Period. End of story. You don't have a slow metabolism the heavier you are, the faster your metabolism is. Fact. Unless you have a diagnosed thyroid condition- which usually accompanies tons of other horrible symptoms and can even be fatal- you don't have a 'slow metabolism'. I started out eating over 2000 calories a day and losing 2-3 pounds a week. Scary to think of how much I must've been eating before that. Currently eating 1600 calories a day and continuing to lose, and as I lose I reduce the number of calories; because guess what, as I lose weight- my metabolism slows! Not the other way around. There is less tissue for my body to 'feed'.

If we could burn every feel-good Doctor Oz article about a magic bean that'll make you lose weight with no effort, quit making excuses for our lifestyles and treat fatty, fried foods, sweets, sweetened drinks, etc. as occasional treats instead of meal staples; we'd be a very healthy country.

Roman, congrats on getting healthier and your post was spot on and inspirational!

Having lived abroad for quite some time, I get where it comes from. I've queitly blended into a crowd in several major European and Asian cities and watched the loud, obease, American tourist loudly show their ignorance of the local culture while proclaiming they should be treated better than anyone else simply because they are American citizens. At home I've also noticed a steady decline in sophistication and overall awareness/understanding of the world outside our boarders. At least we can poke fun of ourselves with the whole 'Murica thing.

Living in Germany now with fellow Americans I see this quite often as I tour the country. It is really sickening.

Yep, they all hate us. Until there is a war or a conflict.

Everyone is too sensitive nowadays...

I am more saddened how the front of the Mustang looks like a Mazda LOL

LOL, I could start a thread for that APAD but I think you'd be in the minority on that one!

As far as fighting wars and natrual disasters go, COULDN'T AGREE MORE!

I thought you were asking about the new look of the 2015 Mustang.

Yes, it's offensive.

urban dictionary said:
'Murica:
The term "murica" is the way how many people with extremely thick, American accents, pronounce "America". The term is used to denote extreme, extreme nationalism and patriotism, but not necessarily facism. It is generally seen as a derogatory yet humorous way to describe most Americans: fat, lazy, gunwielding, war loving, horse riding, saloon fighting, beer drinking, sex wanting or etc.

according to knowyourmeme, murica originated from a post in 2003, but then re-appeared a year later from the red states who voted for George Bush's re-election.
1.) "YO dawg I was carrying a rocket launcher in GTA IV (Grand Theft Auto IV) and the officers don't even give no ####."

"I'm tellin' ya, murica."

I think they were just going for the whole "extremely 'American'" thing here. Also, if we're getting politically correct here, I'm sure it offends some folks from South America that the USA has decided that they're the only "America."

I'm from the south, and I still think if you can show me someone offended by that, I'll show you someone who is overreacting.

I just find it funny that MT couldn't go all the way with it. You know the first cover had to be titled 'MURICA, the correct way to spell the slang term.

The phrase always reminds me of Team America: World Police. Terrible movie.

I don't find the shirt offensive at all. I think it's rather cool even though I'm not a hot rod/pony car fan. One thing American car fans can be proud of is a moster V8 in a small RWD coupe.

I get the whole 'Murica thing and have used the term half-jokingly in passing with family and friends in the past. I think it's important to be able to laugh at yourself.

Exactly what I was thinking, at least we can laugh at ourselves.:props:

Yeah, this all funny but we've got a person here that hates the spelling of it, hence, this is why I started the thread.

I've got some other topic ideas I'm working on too, stay tuned!
