I don't know whether to hate you all or love you all

lol

Hi everyone. I found this forum while searching for a way to remove some water spots, and over the course of the last two days I think I've read most of the instructional and informative posts that I could find on here, and somehow along the way, wanting to simply remove those spots I have has suddenly turned into wanting to full out detail my 3 vehicles to their best. So now instead of looking at spending less than $50, I think I'm closer to $400 now in all the things that I think I now need. I wanted to get some opinions to make sure I'm getting everything I need. The 3 vehicles I will be working on will be a black '93 4Runner which has noticeable water spotting and some scratching mostly on the hood and roof, a titanium '00 Civic which has some minor water spotting and really hazy plastic on the headlight lenses, and a silver '04 Yukon XL which is fine other than some minor surface scratching (about 1" x 3") on the hood. The products I think I need are as follows:

Poorboy’s Porter Cable 7424 Polish & Protect Kit
Pinnacle Poly Clay Bundle
Poorboy's EX-P Pure Sealant
Poorboy's QW+
Cobra Microfiber Towel Combo
The Supreme Guzzler Waffle Weave
Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaning System
DP Perfect Vision Glass Kit

Am I covering all the bases with my selections, or did I leave something out? Also, are these solid choices, and if anyone has any other suggestions or substitues, please let me know, and why that is. I look forward to any and all help. Thanks.

Kevin

Looks pretty good. I like to load up on towels tho. The more you have, the less you wash.

I would substitute PB clay with Clay Magic clay that is available at Autozone (under $15). Works great and saves a few $$. Also Poorboy's QW+ is a bit more work then you think it's almost like waxing your car, PB Spray and Gloss is a true quick detailer (which I assume you are looking for) no? All else look good......

Thanks everyone for the replies.

wytstang: Thanks for the heads up on the clay magic, but unfortunately I just called Autozone and they don't have it. I may just stop by and see for myself though as the guy I talked to seemed a little clueless. Thanks also for telling me about the PB QW+, as all I wanted was a quick detailer. I guess I will just use the Spray and Gloss that comes in the PB Porter Cable kit.

Only thing I Will add is this...

1) Get some good car shampoo... since you are going PB's go with their SS&S...
2) Get another WW drying towel at least.... (I've dropped mine and had to grab another)...
3) Speaking of towels.... grab some more.. not sure what is included in that kit, but get a couple of Miracles.. they are great.. again, you dont want to be short and drop one... because once you drop them.. you're screwed...
4) Dont see a tire dressing product... (I dont think)... get the PB's, OR I happen to like the Wolfgang Tire Gel...
5) Whatever you order, there will be more that you've either forgotten about or will want to try.. so keep that in mind...
6) Get more applicators.. either the foam, or the MF applicators....

Have fun.... and watch your Credit Card balance grow!!!

Advance Auto also carries it, they also offer Megs and Mothers clay KIT (both around $18) comes with paint cleaner and some other stuff. I would see if you could get the clay magic as they don't make you buy the paint cleaner and is a few $$ cheaper.

aces: Thanks for the tips. I guess you're right about not having too many towels. And you're right, I forgot to include some tire dressing and car soap. I was contemplating getting a wash gun too. What's the consensus on that? Good investment?

wytstang: Unfortunately I am in a small town, so for anything auto related I only have the Autozone or our Walmart to choose from, unless I feel like driving over an hour, so online is my only real option.

FloridaNative: I have watched the videos and thanks for your vote of confidence. I will take pictures and show the outcome, but it won't probably be until next week when I order everything, so I'm probably not looking at getting started on anything for about 2 weeks, even though I would like to do it tomorrow on my day off. lol Too much on the credit card as is, so I need to wait until the next billing cycle. :(

You're very welcome Wicked. I hear ya on the credit card. My husband is ready to skin me alive! lol As far as the foam gun, I love mine. I wouldn't wash without it. A swirl free finish starts with good washing habits and I find the foam gun a tremendous help in keeping my vehicle as swirl free as possible in the washing process. IT's also very versatile. I've even used mine to water the grass and wash the windows of my house.

You can get the Meguiar's NXT wash or the Gold Class at Walmart in the auto section. They also sell Meguiar's Quick Interior detailer. Justin just used the Armor All tire gel on his last detail and the tires looked great, I think you can get that at Walmart too. That should help to definetly sustain you until you order from AG again. The new DP foam gun soap is awesome and you can use it in the bucket also if you don't have a foam gun. The DP and Pinnacle interior protectants are both excellent. 303 is a great protectant too with lots of UV protection. The Pinnacle black onyx is an awesome product for tires also. :) I hope this helps you out. I can't wait to hear about your results when you finally get to work on your cars. I know you'll be totally hooked. :) I'm so excited for you. :)

To save on the funds (which allows you to spend even more at AG later), you should see what the Walmart carries for some of this. Or if you have a Costco nearby. I love the Meg's Gold car shampoo, the NXT is good too, but I prefer the Gold. Get plenty of MF's but again, you should be able to pick up some cheaper at Walmart, Costco, Sam's, or Target. They aren't as quality as what you get at AG, but they are good for engine, wheels, bumpers, etc.

The foam gun is a must have, but of course it can wait until another time. I love mine. I love the DP wheel kit too, but to save $$ you should try the Amor All tire gel.

Good luck and welcome to the club!

get some 303 aerospace protectant. i absolutely love the stuff... and since your getting a PC, get the xmt pad cleaner and conditioner, it makes cleaning your pads incredibly easier!

I just wanted to say thank you once again to all that have given me advice. It is definitely a great feeling to come to board as a complete newb and outsider and have my first post answered by thoughtful, encouraging people. I've been to many other boards regarding many different subjects where it is quite the opposite. Am I still on the same internet or what?? :)

No outsiders here! We're all family. Related to one another by our love for beautiful cars. :) I know what you mean though about AG. I always say that I wish the whole world were like AG. You come here and everybody is so nice and then you leave your computer and go out into the real world and it's like WOOOAAAH!! Where did all these grumps come from? lol :p

Its kinda the same when you go out on a boat.. everyone is friendly waves hello when they pass, and will help you out etc... Once you are back on pavement, they usually give you the finger instead... :-)

lol Ay!! I miss my boat so much! sighs! The ocean's just not the same without one. :( sniff sniff.

Woohoo! Just as I thought my local Autozone was clueless and they did in fact carry Clay Magic. They only had 2 available so I bought them both for 10.99 each. Seemed like a pretty good price I guess. One less thing to order next week. :D

Told you :p also a good idea is to cut the clay in half cause 1) that half should be able to do 2 cars 2) if you drop your clay it is no longer good as all the little dirt/rocks will be part of it, this way you will have a second piece instead of having to use a whole new one. Some folks cut their bars into 4 peaces......
