Well, I have one of these sitting around but terrified of it. I think I'm going to give it a go. What do you guys think of this? RPMs range from 1500-2800 according to the Mak website. Once I get the hang of it, this thing should polish up just like any other top rotary, right??
 
I am not familiar with that particular model in detail, but that RPM range is on the high side for correcting paint. The current Makita 9227 has an rpm range of 600-3000 which is much better suited to polishing. The highest rpm you will run during normal correction will be roughly 1500-1800 as this is the speed where most polishes break down at their best. The problem with the 9217 comes when you want to slow the rotary down to slower speeds (900-1200) to burnish the paint when the polish is almost completely broken down to prevent any buffer trails or micromarring and bringing out the best out of the paint (Zenith technique).
